Hi,
My approx 1yr old Pitmix seem to fluctuate between firm formed stool one day and the can have pudding type stool the next. The soft stool is very malodorous. She other wise is very hight energy and seems well. I feed either Natures Variety kibble with a few dollops of canned. Or she receives Natures Variety raw patties. The sources of meat vary.....chicken, beef, lamb. She also receives several times a week....Grizzly Oil, Vit E, Alfalfa/Kelp. About once a week she gets raw chicken liver, hearts. I also started a Probiotic Tablet (2/day) based on weight. She is very lean and hyper. Also can be an indiscriminate muncher in the yard....she will find an occassional poop (I scoop daily) but sometimes miss a few. She also chomps on acorns, but spits them out.
She had a fecal done in Sept that was fine. I"m gonna run another sample to the vet in the mean time.
Does anyone have any insight?? Could it be some sort of irritable bowel disease???? just thinking outloud!
Was wondering about Prozyme suppplement

Which of the foods precedes the pudding stool? Has there been a check for parasites?

Parasites, either worms, coccidia or Giardia are a possibility. Giardia poop is very stinky and can have a green tinge. Dog can get it by drink out of toilets, or drinking or playing in ponds, puddles or streams.
The poop eating might be causing it.
You could give her some yogurt, kefir, or other probiotic supplement to help firm her stool.
A little canned pumpkin will also help firm her up.

I didn't know that about Giardia poop's smell. Filing away....
The new fecal is a good idea.

I took a stool sample to the vet and it came back negative for parasites. I have to question if they did check for Giardia. It might not always be evident on a single stool sample...(if I'm correct on that??)....
I don't mix raw and kibble in the same meal. Some days they get raw, some days kibble.
I have not established a pattern with the loose stool as it relates to food at this time. Its been inconsistent. But I"m going to start keeping a log.
Thanks for all the input. I'm going to get some canned pumpkin also.

You ARE correct on that. Not always detectable in stool, depends on if they are sheading cysts. Also a round or antibiotics will not always clear it right away.
Here is a link to a very simplified article on Giardia that is good, minus the vaccine stuff.

The log is a good idea.

Also how long has this been going on, and has the dog ever been on antibiotics, and if so what kind.

Hi Jen,
Thanks for the forward on Giardia. I adopted the dog from a shelter in the beginning of Sept. She was treated for kennel cought with antibiiotics in June/July. I'd have to look thru the records for the type of antibiotics.
I have put her on probiotic tablets with her meals. I'd say since I've had her she has intermittenly had loose stool, say for a day, then she goes back to primarily formed stool. She does poop several times a day (?) Much more often than my other dogs.
I did speak with the vet's office. They suggested to bring in stool samples on several different occassions...I was questioning if Giardia was part of the exam on the sample yesterday. Yes it was, negative!

Linda, this is exactly what I've gone through w/my APBT, Mia. Finally, her contact allergies got so bad I took her to a holistic vet who diagnosed her w/dysbiosis. You can look up the term, but in humans it's commonly referred to as Leaky Gut Syndrome. Can cause all kinds of unpleasant things. I have her on support for her small intestine, since that's primarily what was damaged from the shelter "health" protocol and she is 100x better. I know where you're coming from. Seems like more comes out than goes in. Try Prozyme, also, and Primal Defense; one helps break down food (enzymes) and one replenished natural flora. Mine didn't have Giardia, either, although traditional med. thought she did.
