According the the Dogtra 1700 manual, you're not supposed to leave the collar on for more than 2 hours without rotating it on the neck so that the contact points aren't on the same part of the skin for too long.
For those of you that leave the collar on all day, do you do this? If not, have you noticed any issues with the skin becoming irritated? I've used e-collars before and never noticed this. I'm wondering if this is a real world concern and something I should be religious about, or if it's just something that Dogtra is saying to cover their butts and I should just keep an eye out?
On a GSD, I dunno. I admit to leaving it on Mia too long (a few hours) and WOW. What a mistake. Now, she DOES have contact issues as you remember. But, the contact points literally left holes in her skin. Holes. I think it was a combo of her issues and leaving it too long on a practically bald dog, but I would use a bit of caution w/any dog. Check periodically.
I have had no problems with this. I just will not tell you how long I have left in on by mistake. I do rotate all the collars like in Eds video, this has helped alot!
Okay, thanks for your input. There was another thread that mentioned that Cindy had said to put it on in the morning and take it off at night and that's what made me wonder about irritation in long-term use.
I'll keep an eye on him but I won't get the timer out just yet. Thanks all.
Amber, I do rotate the e-collar every 3-4 hours. I always check but haven't seen any red irritation but my main concern is a deadening of the skin, which has a medical term but don't remember what it's called. That's what I don't want to have happen. So I rotate.
I do take off the e-collar on walks cause I use the prong with DD collar backup during those times, and it's also off for formal training twice a week. It's also off when he goes to sleep for the night and it's off when I'm gone from the house and he's in his crate.

Necrosis?
I'm definitely with you about regular moving, regular checking, and no 24-hour stints.

Thank you Connie! Yes, necrosis (Not remembering the word was bugging me.)
I'm not certain that the e-collar worn in one spot for a long period of time can cause this, but don't want to take that chance. So I rotate. I also try to keep the e-collar from being worn in exactly the same spot time and time again (with the prongs in the same place where they were previously). That's not making sense. Hope you know what I mean. I need more coffee....
