Yep yep yep! So many of you warned me and it has happened so congrats to all you prescient people here!
Just a quick recap - my step-daughter (18yo) has a gorgeous Border Collie cross Kelpie dog (about 1 year old) that never gets walked and lives in the backyard of an inner-city house. There is a LOT of foot traffic past the fences and both Emmy and her companion Johnny (6 yo Cocker Spaniel) have been amusing themselves by barking at everyone who goes past.
Neighbours on the entire block have complained and last week a Council Ranger was parked outside their home from 9-5 every day for the entire week recording the dogs' barking.
When we dog-sat the two dogs a few weeks back to *try and teach them to stop barking* they were perfect dogs. A VERY long walk every day, training every day and then either inside with us or playing in the backyard with our three dogs....NOT a peep out of them!
When I took the dogs home I told my step-daughter and her mother that the dogs simply HAD to have at least an hour walk a day and it would also be good to do some training classes with them. They promised faithfully that they would BUT they also said how *peaceful* and *relaxed* it had been not having the dogs around!
(yes warning bells did go off for me at that point!)
So yep.....they have now been ordered to get rid of the dogs due to their nuisance barking and Muggins here has said that Yes I will take them!
I like the dogs but OMG I am soooo sick of seeing dogs punished for their owner's idiocy!!
Thanks for listening to me vent!!

people are so thoughtless.my sister in law now wants a great dane,it will never be walked, trained.she said she hates cats but has one and the cat was peeing in the house with the previous huskys she got rid of.i do alot of work at shelter and am so sick of seeing people disposing of there animals because of this and that.if she and my brother inlaw were to go to shelter i would be sure to tell shelter to put them on the do not adopt list!some people should never have an animal if they cant properly train ,and care for.
oh i must brag.my husband and i took our lab for a run in the woods,i was a bit behind them,i hear leave it!leave it!.i came up and there was a opposum.he was all scrunched down, jake was very curious but didnt touch it and did leave it,jake is 15 months and doing well with drop it ,leave it come,no matter what situation,i am proud of him leaving the opposum, they can do alot of damage

Brooke,
Care to make a small wager on how long before step daughter turns up with another puppy?
I'll offer good odds to you.

It is interesting to me that the dogs can be given away to someone, after they have been declared a nuisance. When you say "get rid of the dogs," what do the authorities actually require? Do they give you a list of options at that point?
My point here is, if you rehome the barking dog, isn't that just moving the problem somewhere else?
That is a general question about the law above, but in the scenerio that we are talking about, Brooke will be taking them in, so there won't be any rediculous barking anymore. The problem barking won't be relocated, it will be eliminated.
I have to commend you for helping these dogs. Imagine the hell they have been going through. Well, actually, they have probably rather enjoyed themselves! Bark, bark, bark...all day long...bark, bark, bark while I sing this song...
I think you have the right plan of action, and this is evidenced by the time you spent with the dogs. It is a shame that this (hopefully) decade-long responsibility has been unloaded on you. You know what is going to be ironic? When your step-daughter comes over and wants to play with the doggie! Just remember, breathe slowly and deeply and count to ten...
Added: Can I get in on this? I am going to say 4 weeks.

What a job!
I am impressed that they actually got the facts before passing judgement on the dogs.
Good for you for helping the dogs!

You know, in many states, it's not all that easy for the city to make someone get rid of their dogs. Usually (with the exception of something severe) there's lots of warnings, and a lot of time to fix the problem.
So my question is, if these people have been given time and multiple chances to get their dog in line, and don't...why are they then allowed to turn around and get another dog immediately?
Are there states where part of the penalty is being prohibited from owning another dog for a certain period of time? For the states I'm familiar with, people aren't even banned from owning dogs even if the dog seriously harmed someone as a result of the owner's stupidity. They will lose their existing dog, but nothing stops them from repeating the cycle immediately. And so the public just screams "breed ban." When are we going to stop the Bad Owner Recycling Program?
Sorry, this is probably a little too far off topic, since we're talking about barking issues. But seriously, if it is to the point that a dog gets taken away...then why are people able to get another one right away? And if they get one, why aren't they required to take obedience training, or at least prove to an evaluator that they have trained their dogs? That just doesn't make sense to me.

While in principal I agree with you Amber. What could be done to enforce it? Stamp their forehead TSTB? (to stupid to know better).
Jeez Rick, at 4 months I think I'd only stand to lose money at any odds.

It is amazing to me as well Amber.
I watch those stupid Animal Cops shows on Animal Planet and it is a frequent occurrence to hear that the offender has been told not to get anymore animals by the courts in a previous case. UGH!!!
There is just not enough manpower to diligently monitor people.
Which I can see since dumbass pet owners pop up ALL the time. They are spread pretty thin.
We don't even have animal control here where I live....so it is really sad to see all the loose dogs running in packs, scrounging for food and sick.
At least someone has "saved" these two and is willing to care for them the way they should be.
