I have both the basic dog obedience and the competition obedience videos and neither show the flip finish. I am very pleased with what I have learned from Ed's video and have integrated much of it in my training with my high drive 8 month old GSD.
My boy is such a joy to train as he really gets what I want from him, learns so fast, and he enjoys it too. I am using the marker "yes" - this is a new thing for me and I like it - and I work most of the time with an Ultra ball that he would walk through fire for. We are at the point where he has all the basic exercises down extremely well except I haven't introduced the flip finish.
I know how I have trained this in the past, but I really like how Ed introduced new exercises and wonder if there is a video somewhere with this in it so I can see if there is a better way. I looked through his site and didn't find any. If there is one, can someone share the link?

Well, here is a suggestion. If the dog understands completely what "fuss" means, and has proper positioning down, he will probably go from a front position into the fuss using the flip finish automatically. Have you already taught him a regular finish?

I hadn't taught him a formal finish yet of either kind, but he is very solid on his heel position. I have had him just going into a moving heel position up to now.
I was hoping to see the steps Ed used, but I guess I will do it the way I have done it in the past. His methods aren't all that different than what I have done, but then I never taught this with markers or a ball and I had wanted to see if it was taught any better that way. I am all for learning new and better ways and am more than happy to tweak my methods if it will give me a happier dog and a better performance.

John - I wanna see your "automatic" flip finish.

I don't have a flip finish yet, as my pup is not at that point yet (2-3 months I think). The sequence I was describing happened with another member of this board's dog (Leerburg dog actually) who just started to train at my club. The dog had a complete understanding of fuss, and of the positioning, and had never done a finish before. My TD was evaluating the dog's understanding of fuss positioning, and had him front the dog, and then give the fuss command. The dog flip finished into position, which he had never done before. Rereading my post, I admit that changing "probably" to "could possibly" would have been better.

John ,I have never heard of a dog that does not know or was taught the finish and is in a 'here in front" and his handlers says "fuss" and the dogs does a flip finish on his own , now THAT I have to see! I am not saying that you are BS'in us simply i would love to see it.
Now you say the dog knows what "fuss " is and maybe that exercise on the dog was done so well that the dog simply put himself in the "fuss" when the handler commands him too,if so, that's pretty impressive .

That is what happened, and yes we were pretty darn impressed. The fuss exercise was done very VERY well. My TD was having the handler do all kinds of different speeds, turns, squares, figure eights between people, everything under the sun to see how the dog reacted and he was rock solid through everything even to the point of being focused and "bottling up" his drive. He looked great. Then from a front my TD had the handler give him a fuss and low and behold the dog flipped into a finish. We all clapped.

It's possible. I know a Dutchie that just does it on his own.

Are you talking about me, John?
If so, it didn't quite work like that...
For the first 6 months I had Eich, I did that other kind of finish. I started purely with the position before I attempted any movement. In fact, *I* thought the other way looked cooler....but whatever.
However, to validate your point, when I discovered that the flip finish was better for what I planned on doing, I switched to that. It only took a time or two of blocking him with my leg before he simply used the only other route available to him.
I mean, there's only two ways to get to the fuß position. I don't have enough experience to know which one a dog would usually spontaneously choose, but...the options are quite limited. Limited to two, in fact.

So when he did the flip finish at club had he done it before? I could have sworn that I heard you say you weren't sure what he would do since he had not done it before???
