Posted in another section also....please help I posted this on Sunday (23rd)
My 18 month old GSD just received his CD title yesterday but today I showed him again in novice obedience. Just TODAY he started nipping at my shoes and pant legs while we were in the ring.....we were disqualified.....he has never done that before and did not do it outside of the ring...???? Not sure why he did this, but how do I correct if he only does it during the show??? I am a novice and any help would be appreciated....do not want this to be a serious problem. I plan on moving on for his CDX and am concerned....thank you...
I had posted this in another section of the forum, but thought maybe I should also post here....he does not do this at home just did it in the competition ring, and did not do again today when I worked him at home.....HELP PLease,,,,
You right , How can you correct it if it only happens in the ring. First you might think of what is different in the ring. Are you behaiving differently in the ring than when you train? Is your training stressfull to the dog and when you are in the ring the dog realizes it can get away with picking(correcting) you with out you correcting back. Without having seen any of it I would probably suggest looking at the training and making it less stressful, more fun for the dog. And Im a believer in ending all training sessions with a short exciting play time.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
I have the same question as Mike, but also I am sure that your heeling might not be as polished as you might think.Heeling rather it is a focus heeling or not should be proofed off leash many times.I assure you that if you give your dog a good correction for putting his nose down during heeling, followed with a motivational reward when he does look up , that problem will stop. When i hear ...my dog only does "here" but not "there" I see that they really haven't polished that exercise, or taught the exercise improperly. I am telling you from experience ,over years of hearing that same problem what it really entailed. Go back to your basic and work on your dog focusing on you during heeling,DONT allow for one second your dog to look down , make it fun and motivational, rewarding for him to look up at you at all times.small sessions and end on a good note...
