I HAVE MADE HOME-MADE LIVER TREATS. I cut it into strips and dried it out in the oven. It is hard to be consistent cutting into strips. I am going to try grinding it in a food processor and shooting it out of a jerky gun. I was wondering if anyone has tried to do anything like this before??

Yes..... several forum members make their own FST foods and training treats.
If you freeze the meat or liver slightly first, it's much easier to slice it thin. Also, microwave "jerky" is VERY quick and easy.
Chicken breast, for example, results in such a low-fat product that you can even carry it in a pocket. Chicken thigh is greasy, and you need a baggy or (my favorite) this: http://leerburg.com/736.htm

Connie gave me the recipe a while back and it's just about all I use anymore as food reward for anything, tracking, ob, etc.. It's easiest to slice into thin strips when frozen and the thinner the slices the quicker it cooks. I buy big bags of boneless skinless breasts, slice them up, put them on a plate in the micro in a single layer & micro them on high in 5 minute increments until they are done, and they are done when no longer translucent & are very very dry. I then stick them in a big baggie & toss them in the freezer. I just take a handfull out when I need it and stick them in my pockets, they defrost in a nanosecond in my pocket. Connie's recipe also mentions you can sprinkle them with parmesan or garlic before you micro, but I've never done that. The plain ones are like "crack" to my dog.
I have tried to do it with chicken thighs and it was a greasy mess not only in the micro, they retain too much grease and are gross even after being microed to death.

P.S. By "garlic," I meant powder and not fresh. Fresh garlic is better not to use in regular food items for the dog, IMO.
And by "cheese" I meant that fake powder in a round green box. The real stuff gets too greasy.
However, like Sue, I found that my dogs loved all three wildly, so I make just the plain now.
The freezing means that it doesn't matter whether it's done evenly or not.
I buy the teeny Zuke's salmon treats on LB (they are teeny -- like a small M&M, and perfect for FST) and make this jerkey for longer chewies (you can quit microwaving while still plable if you want).

I'm wanting to raise the criterion in my FST. I don't like using hot dogs or the liver treats and need to find something that doesn't smell as strong. Any suggestions?

and the unflavored white-chicken microwave "jerky" earlier in this thread..... cut the pieces into bits instead of slices. One chicken breast does many dozens and one turkey breast does hundreds.
