I ran into a guy at work today who needed me to get him 6 female rats and 2 male rats. It didn't take much thinking to figure out he was planning to raise rats. When I asked him what he was feeding he said the dogs and asked if that was a problem.
I said no, of course not so long as he offed his rats humanely. I also inquired as to his raw program as I am always interested in how people get by with what they do.
He mentioned he preferred Rats/mice over other things because he knew where the animals came from. He could raise them himself and fast enough that he could supply his dogs with enough for 4 days a week. The other days he bought out using chicken, beef, or whatever.
I was wondering if any of you have heard of someone doing this? I'm not about to run off and buy myself a rat rack but it was an intriguing idea.

It all sounds perfectly logical, yet I shuddered uncontrollably as I read your post. I have only one word: WILLARD
On the serious side aren't RATS carnivores or at the least, omnivores (sic)? I only feed my dog herbivores - it just seems wrong to feed my meat eater other meat eaters, but then again it could be just another reaction to WILLARD (shudder, shudder, shudder).
His dogs actually EAT the rats???? Fresh? Mine will only eat a rat they find that has been dead and dried for MONTHS. They won't eat mice either.
I believe rats are omnivores rather than carnivores.
I feed lots of rats and mice. Large and medium rats I feed whole, sometimes I need to cut them open and pull the fur back a bit, sometimes not, it depends which one of my dogs is eating it. Small rats and mice I grind up. My grinder can rip through them when they are still frozen with no problem hair and all, I was pretty impressed.
Some of my dogs love them, some dont really care for them, all of them will eat it, but its certainly not their favorite thing.
I also do guinea pigs and rabbits every now and again.
