Random questions.
First when you see the words "Advanced Obedience" What comes to your mind? Is it really discipline basic obedience beyond what the average pet knows? Or is it obedience training and positions outside the basics (sit, down, stay, heel, out, stand)?
And if it is the latter what positions come to mind?

...
In what context?
Are you talking about competition obedience, or maybe a pet obedience class that has levels of difficulty and achievement?
It might mean using silent signals only, maybe increased distraction, adding jumps over obstacles on command.... directional retrieving, scent discrimination ...

I would say any kind of training past basics. The only positions that come to mind would be those involved in tricks.
I think your average owner would consider anything other than sit and stay advanced.

What ever Context you feel like really. I am not really aiming for any answer, mostly just a open ended question.

Advanced ob would bring schutzhund etc to mind, even those funky dancing dogs.

The first thing that popped into my mind was a dog that doesn't need a leash under any circumstance, no matter what.

Like Al and Carol, the first thing that pops into my head is a totally reliable dog. Anyone can teach their dog tricks, but a dog that will stay in his "place" for two hours, or hold a down indefinitely, is "advanced"

I've always figured it was getting at off leash.

I would think advanced obedience would include some or all of off leash heeling, hand signals, retrieving, jumping, articles, drop on recall, and go backs.
