Just had our dog spayed (15 months old) and just got the staples off two days ago. Vet checked her out and everything looks good! But I noticed the other day that her urine is greenish-dark yellow in color???
Anybody else deal with this?? Th Vet tech kind of dismissed it and told us to get a urine sample if we were concerned?? Then I forgot to ask the Doc. whn he took off the staples and cleaned her up??
thanks

Hypocalcemia can cause that, I think I have read.
Of course, it may not be that. I am just saying that it's a possibility. So you'll want to call the vet. S/he will probably ask if the dog has been thirsty and lethargic.

Not thirsty, nor has she been "lethargic". She has got to run around and play for the past few days after the staples were taken off??
Thought that she might have a UTI of sme sort. Thanks I'll look up information on the above mentioned illness?
Thanks again

No to both of those?? Live in upstate NY so there is no grass out (or very little), all covered by snow?
I feed her Canidae (sp?) kibble, with some raw meat slowly introduced to eventualy go completely raw!
Nothing out of the ordinary to eat??
Just read about Hypocalcemia (milk-fever) and I didn't see anything about colored urine, and the dog doesn't seem to be exibiting any of the other signs of the illness??
Any other ideas out there???
thanks again.

I haven't heard/read of green urine with a UTI, but maybe it looked green but was more dark gold (concentrated)?
But yes, I'm with you 100%; I would call the vet. I'd collect the first sample of the morning (a clean catch, if you can, meaning letting the stream start and THEN catching the rest of it*) in preparation. If you have not done a urine catch, I've found that a flattish pan (like a disposable pie pan) is good..... it's hard to get something tall under there. Also, you want to be really slickety..... no big production that chases her away. Have your covered container ready to pour it into.
*This is to allow the stream to wash off bacteria around the urethra.

Nope, not yellow like a dehydrated sample, but slightly green? I checked a few different times and in a few different locations as to make sure it wasn't due to the surface she went on?
Thanks again

Any other ideas out there???
1. Here's something interesting about post-surgical increases in bilirubin:
http://olddoc.tmu.edu.tw/chiaungo/profes/bilirubin.htm
2. Found that hypoalcemia thing, and you're right that your dog doesn't sound anything like this dog ("Last Monday our 6 1/2 year old German Shepherd Omar began feeling very lethargic. She lost her appetite and was continuously thirsty but wasn't interested in doing anything else. Several trips to the vet indicated
that her blood was normal i.e. white counts, etc but she had a low blood calcium level. Her urine was green in colour. A calcium injection was given to her on the Wed and she perked up but then her blood calcium dropped after a day. ")
http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dhypocalcemia.html
Also, the hypocalcemia diagnosis appears to have been either wrong or a small part of a bigger problem. ("Low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) can be indicative of a number of conditions so there are other possibilities. In addition, calcium is one of the lab values that seems to have a high error rate in lab testing. ... Finally, calcium is bound to albumin (a form of protein) in the blood stream and if albumin levels are low, total calcium levels will be low but ionized calcium (the active form) are normal. In this case, the hypocalcemia is a false finding even though the lab is correctly reporting the measured calcium levels.")

Ok, thanks for the Links. I am going to the VET first thing in the morning to get a sterile sample container? Should I need urgency in this matter with my VET. Could be a liver problem that is possibly fatal??
Thanks for all of the help?

You won't need a sterile container. A clean flat container and a clean bottle with a lid.....
I didn't get the fatal liver problem feeling on that site (any of them), with your dog's behavior. I got the idea that there might be post-surgical bilirubin change, which I don't know much about.
I would just call the vet first thing and say that you have a green-urine thing going on and that you are going to get a clean catch and bring it in. S/he will say if you should do anything more or different. S/he may say it doesn't even need to be a clean catch.
I'm not a health professional. The call to the vet will be very reassuring, I feel sure. :>
