I have a now one year old Mali who is on a raw diet. He use to be around 70#. Weighed him today and he is 68#. He gets almost as much as GSD and more than Doberman who is the same weight. He gets close to 2 # a day. How much do other Mal owners feed there dogs? He looks a little thin but I like em thin!

I feed 2 to 3% of their "ideal" body weight I want them to be at.
Jesea, my anorexic child gets 4-5% since she is one that is ALWAYS moving unless she is in her "place" in the house or in her crate.

This is a little off topic…
I was watching tv over the weekend and a commercial came on for a particular dog food – I can’t remember which one. I was not really paying attention, but the phrase “their needs change as they get older” caught my attention.
I realize companies are trying to sell all types of food for all ages, but it made me think about my raw feeding.
For anyone who has fed raw for the entire life of your dog, or are simply feeding an older dog, do their needs change? Do they need more calcium/vitamins as they age (like we do)? Or does the amount simply change – perhaps less because of decreased activity? I’m not talking about a special-needs dog; just a senior citizen.
Makes me wonder how the companies assess an elder dog’s needs and what different ingredients they feel meet those needs.
As you think, so shall you be. |

I think much of that is a marketing stratagy.
One thing is that dogs might start to put on weight because of decreased metabolism and activity..... so less food needed. Another is the kidney-protein BS. Another is the legitimate nudge to consider joint supplements.

Oh, I definitely agree. But I had never even given any thought to possible need changes and how that relates to raw feeding.

For my dogs it simply depends on the individual dog. I had an older mix at one point who due to an immune disease had a tendancy for necrotic tissue damage happening to his trachea, he also suffered from degenerative myelopathy. So in his case I went to a 100% canned diet when he was 10 years old through the rest of his life until 14 when I had him put down. This was because it caused him great pain to eat anything hard including kibble. Because of this diet I did add older person joint pills (which btw are cheaper and better than older dog joint pills) flax, calcium, blueberries, and green tea.
Even now if I could have thought of something else to give him to help him stay with me longer I would have done it in a second. I miss my dear old bear dog.

How, I wonder, does this relate if you are feeding them both kibble and raw? I want Levi to put on some more weight but can never seem to feed him enough to help him do so. Someone told me the other day, "that is the skinniest dog I've ever seen", lol. While that doesn't really bother me much because I know ppl think dogs should be obese to look healthy, I still want him to gain a little weight. I want that little extra "oomph" for hitting the sleeve. So, if 2-3% of his idea weight is 2.4 pounds a day and I am feeding him 2 cups kibble in the a.m. and about 2 cups raw in the p.m., how come he isn't gaining any weight? Does the fact that he is getting both make a difference in how he gains?

I am not sure that gaining weight will give him extra ooomph.....but conditioning and strength training will help.
My dogs all get ran with a four wheeler, wind sprints, uphill and downhill workouts and I have ordered a pack to start having them pack some weight on our walks.
Rock weighs between 54 and 56 lbs and hits like a truck....any more weight and he would start looking like one of those steroid looking dogs.......I think keeping them in shape and feeding them the meals they need will make a difference for you.

Carole, So you think that maybe he isn't getting enough exercise?
Other than once a day ball running, retrieving, tugging, the only other exercise he gets is his once a week PP training.
Well, he does go up and down stairs too! Although, I never use them for playing w/him. Too afraid of hip issues.
You think I should start doing more up/downhild exercises?

At his age, I think it would be okay to start gradually. Have you had him x-rayed yet?
Is there a park pr somewhere yo can go with gradual hill slopes? And I know you said you were going to get a pack and start jogging.
I put harnesses on my dogs for walks sometimes and let them pull me back up the hill towards home or any other hill that I don't feel like walking up....HA HA . I do not allow them to pull with their collar.
I just put a little pressure on the line, I do not hang back hard or try and slow them a whole lot.
