once again, I am the proud owner (sometimes) of a now 14 week old german shorthair pointer. My dog is becoming an absolute demon when out of the crate now. She goes ballistic everytime she gets out. Jumping on me, nipping, running around like a crazed animal. So i have been watching the 'establishing pack structure' dvd and find it to answer a lot of my questions. First one being, I think I allow her too much unearned freedom because I don't want her to be bored more than anything. I am wondering if it is time to do some more serious crate training/pack structure development where she is in near total confinement except for excercise and bathroom. Any thoughts on this? It is just getting to the point where whenever i let her out, she will not sit still at all and just goes crazy. I am not correcting her at all. But do you consider developing some good pack structure as being correction?
p.s....since i have bothered you guys for a couple of months now with my pup, i wanted to post a picture since she is absolutely beautiful, but can't seem to get it to work. i tried to link using a myspace picture i have, but it won't work. anyone ran into this? you look into those innocent eyes and cant believe how wild she can be.
She sounds like a 14 week old puppy, especially a hunting puppy.
do you play fetch or retrieves with her? its a good way to wear them out...and she is a bird dog!
My pup is a total spaz and a demon when he is bored and has excess energy.
We now take a short walk several times an evening on top of his longer morning walk. Weve been doing this for 3 days now, one longer one in the morning and a short but quick one basically anytime he is just being out of control rather than another long one before bed.
With the two long walks he would sleep hard for a couple of hours afterwards but then he was up and crazy again for most of the day. Breaking it up into the short more frequent walks help his energy to stay more level.
Ths short walk is literally around the block so its 4 blocks total and its enough to get the willies out so he can act like a sane creature instead of a tasmanian devil. It also has worked simply going to the corner and back. I think its the change in scenery and the fresh air that work as a distraction to being a demon.
it takes 8 to 10 minutes and is saving my sanity, Loki's ears and Puppy's face from being mangled due to the need to run off with Loki's ears
