this is a CKC test.
http://www.citizencanine.org/cgn12.htm
i have a couple of questions.
test 2: politely accepts petting.
can you tell the evaluator to let the dog sniff first? ask the evaluator to not pet over the head but under the head? (i find teagan is reactive when strangers pet her on top of the head, she responds well if people low pet her).
test 4: out for a walk.
"the dog may be on eight side of the handler."
?????? what is eight side? is this a typo or some term i've never heard before?
there are a few things i can see as potentially being a challenge for luc (handling of his feet, the noise test depending on what the noise is. and i see the petting as potentially being an issue for teagan, again, depending on how it is done.
but i'd like to try to get this for both dogs, sometime next year (again, my major races will be done early august, though i would hope to have enough time to train for this during training).
i want to get more training/handling experience as i'd eventually like to move on in what i do w/dogs - this seems pretty basic, but a good first step. anyways, anyone who has done this and has any input on my questions, it would be appreciated.
thanks!
Teagan!

oh, and test 8 - playing with the dog - luc doesn't play except for jumping/tickling....what do they mean by play? luc has yet to understand toys.
(though from watching teagan play with toys, he now has started to run, grab the leerburg tug (he only does it w/the leerburg tug), run into the doorway and sit on top of the tug while staring at me....if i try to get him to chase the tug, he looks all horrified, and when he gets it back, he sits on top of it and gives me this look. it reminds me of when i first got him, i kept putting a toy bone in this mouth and praising him, he was all weirded out, i stopped the day he stared at me, very carefully sat the bone back down where i'd picked it up from, and returned to his place, keeping an eye on me the whole time.

I think it's a typo and should read "the dog may be on either side of the handler"
I'd like to get the canine good citizen cert for Chula also, but we have a long way to go!

I got great visual on that one! Very funny! (Luc sure can be a serious fellow, but sounds like he is really benefiting from having Teagan as a role model)

Hi Jennifer,
It looks like the CGN test is nearly identical to the AKC's CGC test (the US equivalent). Here is a link to the official CGC test items:
http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm
By comparison, I think the whole "eight" thing is just a typo (see CGC Test 4) - and it sounds like the dog SHOULD be OK with the "stranger" petting it's head in Test 2 - the CGC test specifies head AND body petting. My guess is that to really award the dog a certificate for being comfortable and mannered in public, and interacting with the public, it needs to be able to put up with some of the silly behaviors that most "strangers" have - like going straight for the top of a dog's head when petting... but I sympathize with you - this would be a sticky part of the test for Oscar too (along with standing for exam...). But I'm looking forward to working towards a CGC with Oscar this year as well, so I guess he'll just have to get over it!

ahhh....thanks lynne and natalya. 'either' makes a lot more sense
yup, luc can be pretty funny. when he put the toy bone back, he had his lips pulled away so that they weren't touching the bone, he's so fastidious sometimes.
natalya, they are the equivalent. i couldn't remember what the US one was called. but yeah, the petting. i don't entirely blame teagan for not wanting to be mauled by strangers, but if we're going to do this, we'll have to work on it.

Just a guess, but could it be 'right' side of handler. E is next to R on the keyboard, and you usually walk dogs on the left.
So maybe it's meant to say "dog may be on right side of the handler"?

that also makes sense!
i'm going to buy some flat collars this weekend that will sit behind the dogs ears so that i can do some training w/those as they'll be allowed in the test.
....i also realized, in addition to the petting, teagan will have to be calm while we are around another handler and dog as part of the test. we have some work ahead of us
