Hello everyone,
My name is Lauren and I live in Albuquerque New Mexico. This is a really nice site with a lot of great info- thank you so much.
I have gotten a German Shepherd in November and she is two years old. Her name is Anya. She is a sweetheart of a dog, very mellow. She is a shutzhund 1, which she got in Germany, however, she is not much of a watchdog and does not have much oopmh. We love her and now she is part of the family, but I am a bit dissapointed she doesnt bark at the door etc... she is very gentle with other animals including my cats and children so there are the pros and cons. I wonder if a bit more protective drive can be trained into the dog. I am a member of our local Shutzhund club here and the trainer doesnt think much will really change with her, but she has recently been bred so we hope maybe with puppies she may get a bit more protective. Am I asking too much?
Welcome! I am not a trainer with experience (started just last year in october), just a member like you, but I have bought my male GSD also when he was 2 yrs old and he did not bark at the door either, worse, what he did was bring a ball to strangers! But strangely he started to bark after a few months. A trainer here told me that a 2 yr old is just starting to come into his own, so maybe that is the case with your dog. My dog still brings balls or whatever else he can bring to strangers once they have entered my yard, but I working on that.
But there are trainers here with experience that hopefully will answer your question.
But is seems from what I read that you have a very sweet dog, mine is very sweet also untill he sees other dogs....I would love to see her pic!
