Hi, I am new here and I have a little problem with my doberman puppy to explain more she is a 6 month old pilot dog(guide dog organization in Columbus Ohio) her origanal raiser couldnt finish raising her due to illness she is a great dog loves to kill her stuffies learning her basic commands pretty good gets along with my kids and my 3 shelties the problem I am having is she is shy whenever she sees someone she doesnt know she starts barking and growling and the fur on her back stands up I dont know how I should deal with this the puppy director says to give her very firm corrections and to get a pinch collar for her they do not tolarate aggression at all but correcting her seems to have no effect at all so does anyone else have any suggestions
oh and she starts obedience classes tuesday and we are supposed to train without any treats or toy rewards
When she hackles and barks and "acts aggresive" does she try to go towards the people or does she hide? Does she tuck her tail up under her with her ears back? Eyes wide? Or?
How long have you had her? If she kept seperate from the other dogs/was she during the bonding period?
Does she know the look at me game? Does she react this way with everyone or more with men or more with women, etc.?
Sorry for all the questions, trying to gather info.

Not trying to be rude, Jessica, but could you please punctuate? It makes reading your posts and getting a clear idea of what you're saying soooo much easier.
Jessica,
So this is a foster pup? So to speak. Doesn't matter I suppose. Why ways, have you spoken to the previous 'foster owner(?)' to see if this is new or an extention of an on going problem? The answer may well help with the solution. If you haven't already, call the last home and try to get an honest assessment of the dog before it was (forgive me here using hard terms) up rooted and thrown to an alien enviroment.
Call the last home. Let us know.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

I do not have any contact with the previous raiser, but the head of the puppy department said her monthly reports were good. they stated she was shy but never mentioned her being aggressive. we only have her until August 5th. then she goes back to be assesed by the guide dog trainer. at which time she will either continue training with them or be petted out.
I will try monday to see if I can get their number and talk to them. maybe they just didnt put the whole truth on the monthly progress reports.
Jessica - about the tail . ;;slaps forhead;; yeah had me a brain fart sorry about that.
You have only had her for one week, that really is not nearly enough time to bond with her. She just got taken from her home, I would personally keep her away from other people and other dogs until you bond with her and earn her trust and work some OB with her alone.
She likely feels she needs to defend herself in this strange territory with strange people. She has never been seperated from other dogs, from a young age? or just since you got her?
Either way - seperate her! Work with her alone or those other dogs will be her security and you will not.
Yes Connie,
Good catch. Is there any way this class can be put off for awhile? If one is going to train a dog without treats or toys, how is it going to happen without some serious bonding or what is going to be, for this dog, (I think) detirmental compulsion?
Jessica, any way to put class this off?
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
