2 mos after I got my dog in Feb '06, I was looking to get a second dog. I came accross Leerburg and told myself to *try* & wait til my dog was 2, then I could get another dog. Well I made it! She is going to be 2 next month.
It's not for sure yet, but I'm really considering it. I really, really , REALLY wanted to adopt a Pit, but I live in Denver and I don't see myself moving to another suburb which allows them. Plus w/the animal 'lovers' we have in office here, I'm not sure if the ban would be added to those areas later, and I would absolutely NOT give up my dog.
I'd really like to adopt a dog to help out, but I also want to keep doing SchH. I do it now w/my Boxer, but she's not from working lines and just doesn't have the protection drives. Although, a working line pup is a crap shoot as well. Hmmm...not sure what I want to do here. Oh, and the other thing is, we are expecting a baby in Sept so after that, I probably won't be allowed to adopt a dog because of their rules w/kids. Opinions? .... and I'm I the only one here with 1 dog?

I only have one dog, but it’s the first time in 10 years that I only have a single dog. I too have played with the idea of bringing in a 2nd dog, but have to admit I am enjoying being able to focus all my time on just Buddy.
Don’t see a problem with you bringing in a second dog with regards to having children, in all the years I raised my 3 kids we always had at least 2 dogs and never had a problem. You will already have the rules in place with your first dog, so those would apply to second dog as well.
Since you’re involved in SchH, you may want to go with a working breed. As time goes on, your training is going to advance more and more and it doesn’t sound like your current dog will be able to keep up with you. Lots of choices to go with – Good Luck

I would suggest a working breed also but it depends on your time constraints. Having one working dog is tough enough for some, but having a working dog and another, pet dog, can break the bank.. and your skin, and the door, and..
I have always had multiple dogs. It can be done, most definitely.
Are you more focused on sport work, looking for suggestions on a breed/way to locate a working prospect, or just want another dog and wondering if it would be a good idea or not?

Ya, I guess, I'm just thinking if a 2nd dog is a good idea or not. And if so, is adopting a good idea? Either way, I'd definitely get a working breed. I like Bullies, so since I can't have a Pit, I'd probably get another Boxer. If I decided to adopt, I'd have to decide soon since most rescues/shelters won't adopt to families w/young children.

Well Boxers are good dogs, definitely more family dogs than anything else. I am going to show my bias again and say take a look at American Bulldog rescues.
I don't think another dog is a bad idea but you have to think about the time you will have once your little one arrives - if two dogs and a baby sound doable and fair to all involved I say go for it.

I have always had multiple dogs, and I raised my son in a house with anywhere from 2 to at one point 6 dogs.
For the most part our house dogs are allowed to be together, I do keep the pup separate from the big dogs 80% of the time so he can closely bond. If there was ever any issues we of course would keep them separated and on a rotating schedule, which we have done in the past and it wasnt that difficult at all.
But I don't mind at all that Loki helps me wear out the little bugger on the days that I am busier or its too nasty to be outside for too long.
