I know I have seen a post on this site earlier for a skinny puppy issue and of course now I cannot find it anywhere. I have a 6 month old cockapoo that has always been very bony (under all that hair). He started a raw diet a couple of months ago and had frequent diarrhea at the beginning until I adjusted his meal size back to 1 chicken neck in the morning and 1 chicken neck with 1 tsp veggies/muscle meat and/or organ meat at dinner. He has been fine with this, happy, energetic, great poops etc. However, no weight gain, he is skinny! He was just at the vets for his neuter and she commented that he was really skinny as well and suggested small more frequent meals.
I would like to add a midday meal but I'm not sure what I should be adding??? There are many experts on this site so I would love some direction in helping to get my puppy gaining some weight.
Thanks!

Sorry I should've added that he had a fecal test in November and it came back clear. Anything else I should look for?

is that all you are feeding your puppy? 2 chicken necks and a tsp of meat once a day?
that is not an appropriate long term diet for a dog, and really not very much food for a growing puppy unless he is super tiny.
How much does he weigh and what is his desired weight?

I was going to suggest another chicken neck at lunchtime (6 months and under should get at least 3 meals a day), but don't know if chicken necks alone have a balanced proportion of meat to calcium.
Hopefully Connie will have input about that. If the ratio is not enough meat on the chicken neck, you can give some hamburger meat at lunchtime.
You might want to look into Nature's Variety Raw Food, comes in small medallions for small dogs and lots of different meat varieties (rabbit, etc). It's balanced, has meat, bone, organs, etc and easy to feed: http://naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1483&-session=naturesvariety:440272FD02fb0187F2XRm170A8CB
That way the pup will get some variety in his diet, which they thrive on (and love).
By all means give him at least one more meal per day.

He weighs just over 10 pounds and I'm not sure what his adult weight should be, I think around 15-20 pounds? Here is a list of what I am feeding him, I think my last post didn't explain that well:
2 chicken necks (some are fairly large)
1 tsp veggie glop
1/4 cup of chunk meat (ground meat, chicken breast, or heart)
1-2 Tablespoons organ meat
Fish oil/vit E
Vit. C powder
I used to give him 3 chicken necks (2 in the morning and one at night with the other stuff) and he had the diarrhea.
Would a third meal be appropriate, and if so, what should it be considering the proportions I have now?
Thanks for your help!

Thanks Sandy - it took me a while to get my last post up. I will give him a midday meal then. Looks like a variety of meat would be the choice for that meal?

For dogs or puppies with diarrhea, the first thing I do is take away all the supplements and things I know will cause loose stools like organ meat. Heart can give some dogs loose stools too. I want to get the pup eating a variety of things and handling them well, before I add veggies or supplements. (I don't feed veggies at all though to my personal dogs)
I would probably cut back on the amount of organ meat you are feeding, to about a tsp. and I wouldn't give it every day.
Have you tried giving him other RMBs besides necks? Like maybe a thigh or leg or something with a bit more meat?
I might also recommend a digestive enzyme for a young dog that seems to be having issues, to see if that helps. http://leerburg.com/55.htm
Maybe Connie will chime in here shortly

Like Cindy, I'd cut back on the organ meat, which might well have been the diarrhea trigger. Doing the puppy-percent math, I came up with a small amount of organ meat a day: about 1/3 to 1/2 OUNCE of organ.
I'm with the third-meal idea too.
I'd give him a "lunch" of low-fat muscle meat only (not rich heart for this trial), just for a few days, so you can assess the poop. If the poop starts getting too soft, you'll know that you need a little bone in that meal. I'd skip the C for this trial, and definitely cut back that organ meat to a teaspoon, as Cindy mentioned.
It sounded a little heavy on the bone to me, too, which is why I mentioned a muscle-meat lunch and watching the poop.
Then post back, OK?
Good for you for giving this small dog the good food that he needs just as much as big ones do.

I have given him a chicken drumstick once and he did okay with it. He's had great stools with all the stuff I've given him so far, once I cut back on the amount of chicken neck. Maybe I could give him a chicken neck for lunch and a drumstick for dinner. Or would that be too much bone?
