I have both my dogs on a raw diet. I have had Bindi for about 5-6 months and her coat is looking better each day. (she is terrior) My other dog cody has gone through lots of changes with his coat since I have fed him raw. When I first had him his coat looked dull and lifeless. Then a skin allergy emerged. Now it seems his coat is getting softer, shinnier, and looking all around healthy. I was just noticing that his coat is getting darker. The f unny thing is you can see the deeper color of black slowly going down his legs. His legs look grey, his coat looks shiny and healthy.
That is my experience.
I have been feeding raw for over 12 years. My vet a non raw believer keeps commenting on how great my dogs always look. He just shakes his head in disbelief and mutters RAW huh.

Sandy, I know exactly what you mean...I spend about 10 mins every morning doling out everyone's specifically-tailored supplements...and then I grab a cup of coffee and head to work.
Coffee is my sole nutrition in the morning - I tried to eat an orange and about gagged.

I notice less full coat "blowing" but I don't notice much less shedding. Then again, I've never had a GSD who ate dog food, so maybe I shoud just shut up, since my comparison ability is lacking.
I confess that my previous GSDs were on kibble and canned, albeit the best I could buy during any particular decade, and they did blow their undercoats. Nice full undercoats that grew no matter if it was cold or hot. But Lear doesn't blow coat, unless you want to consider CONSTANTLY losing topcoat as blowing coat. Constantly. How many times in the day can one sweep the kitchen floor (once for me is more than enough!). Thank goodness I'm not a fanatic, I'd be sweeping (no joke) 8-10 times a day.
So have not seen that raw stops shedding of topcoat. Unfortunately.
My dogs have fantastic coats, even the sables are shiny, clean - no skin or allergy problems - no problems at all. My vet always comments on how wonderful my dogs look, how great condition they are in, and how nice their coats look. Not a lot of shedding, even when they "blow". They are on kibble and always have been. I would put my dogs next to a raw-fed dog and compare coats and health, any day. My dogs would either stand out or "couldn't be better", I guarantee it.
i posted this in another thread when angela asked me if i could compare luc after years on kibble, vs. how he is now on raw - the difference shocked me, i'd never compared, though i knew his coat was looking better. to me, the before and after say volumes about the benefits of raw feeding (and this is only his coat, not the other great things!):
Yes, my dogs have less of an undercoat than they did before all raw.
I always assumed that was a good thing...that the dogs blow their coat twice a year instead of just dripping hair all year, but I can see why you'd want a nice fluffy warm dog where you are!
Perhaps it's not that your dog has less of an undercoat so much as that the hair doesn't manifest the same way. What I mean is, maybe your dog's hair is lying flat instead of standing up and fluffy-like, or has more oil to keep it flat, making it appear to be less of a coat. If the undercoat is flat and sealed a bit (from the oil) it would be more efficient without being so bushy.
Totally guessing here, but it sounds good, right?
Does your dog seem to be colder than the other, fluffier dogs?
