I am sick. I may need to find another home for my 2yr old male shepherd. He has destroyed his kennel. He pushes the kennel off the concrete pad. He has popped the braces off the chain link that connects to the frame. Today he ripped off enough chain link to get out of the kennel. I had to chain the gate. He figured out how to open the gate. I know he is bored but I work all day and really cannot spend the time with him that he needs. He is definitly a high energy guy. I feel like I am grasping for straws trying to come up with a way to hang onto him. I feel like I am giving up my child. Any thoughts to help me salvage this relationship. He is also animal agressive so I fear if he gets loose he will injury one of the neighbors dogs or one of my cows.

long shot-but can he be worked on to help with the cows? give him a job so he goes to bed tired so to speak??
you said animal aggressive-but if that could be dealt with-you could have him help out like that, and that way he has a job-and you are spending more time with him because you are out with the cows....
or just locate a gsd rescue.

How long have you had him?
The answer to salvaging the relationship is pretty obvious, I'm afraid: Time spent training and exercising the dog.
I imagine that most of the people on this board work full-time.
They do things like get up early to exercise the dog and leave a tired dog in his crate or kennel, along with a frozen Everlasting Treat Ball or similar, when they leave for work; they spend time in the afternoon-evening doing motivational training and more exercise; they devote a chunk of the weekends to a high-energy dog..... Just examples.....

connie is right.
that is part of having a dog-heck, i work, go to school, and have lots of doggies.
he can be saved-but it is going to require a lot of time and work on your part. It's worth it though.
what if you brought him inside-and put him an a crate while you aren't home.
It's easy to ignore a dog left in a kennel outside-"hey" you say-"he can walk around, use the bathroom, etc".
It's not enough.
you bring him in the house-and you will HAVE to take him out on walks to potty and exercise-and even just that kind of exercise will improve behavior.
to help with the lack of time-put a backpack on him and get a treadmill, you can get some at used sportsgood stores for less than $100.
he can do this while you make breakfast, brush teeth, etc.

Thanks. I have had him since he was 7 weeks old. He is my 10th shepherd over a 50 year time frame. I have only given one away. I never thought I would be considering this with him. I have tried to wear him down but so far no luck. He is endless. He is obedience trained and does well with command. I know it is bordom being in the kennel. He sees the cows in the fields loose and wants to go after them. I want to keep him and plan to keep trying but this guy can exercise me into the crate and I'll take the treat ball.

That's a really great point.
Frequent five-minute training sessions are doable then, too, and that's something I swear by for keeping a high-energy dog's brain occupied. Also, structured exercise (a game of ball; a power-walk) is what the dog needs. Alone in a kennel is not the exercise he needs. Alone in a whole yard is not the exercise a dog needs.

If you have cows you must have some property. Do you by chance have a John deere gator or mule, 4 wheeler or something. I have my dog run along with me as I spread the horse manure, get some work done and tire the dog! Tired pup is a good pup!

Can relate to you. Sasha is high energy, and will run herself till she drops. Catch her breath and be ready to go again.
I have limited time to work with her too, but have been really making an effort. Wish I could work with her more, but something is better than nothing. What has made a big impact is a structured walk. 30 minutes tonight. Worked in some simple OB and she just crashed when we got home. A totally different dog since I started doing this. This has also helped with some of her aggression issues.
Not an expert like some of the people here. Just what has worked for me.

Ray Allen sells a really neat stainless kennel that should hold him...I agree, bring him inside in a crate and look for more ways to incorporate him into your schedule? My pup accrued about $2000 in property damage WITH crate training, so I feel your pain...but I have basically treated her like my third child - she goes where I go, like my kids. So she has settled in.
I don't know how to do it, but teaching the dog to herd or something may be a good idea (give him a job).

Pam,
Endless energy, is kind of a relative term. Could you be more specific?
Your right though, your going to need to find a solution. Tearing through even cheap chain link panels can't be very healthy for the dog, mentally or physically.
Besides, you yourself have admitted, confining the dog
doesn't really get to the core problem.
Can you really find no daily time for a member of your family?
Engage with the dog.
