i found this response to a question about prongs somewhere...
"if you use pincher or chocker collars that can end up having your dog get cancer and a regular can do this too if you always pull them. get it a harness and you can pull and tug."
no-i know this is pure idiocy, and just plain ridiculous. But do people really believe this? no you all-but i am sure we all have that neighbor or friend with a dog that believes stuff like this-and i am just curious.
where do they get information like this??
i know to uninformed persons-prongs can look cruel, but really-i have heard some things said to me by passers by on walks that just left me confused. And forget when i used to go to the dog park, that was a hotbed for stupid comments.
i always try to understand the other side-even if i think is is stupid-i try to see where they are coming from-but this just blows my mind.
well, when i got luc, b/c he'd never been walked for the 3 years he was in a shelter, he had a wee bit of a pulling issue. and he choked himself on martingales and gentle leaders, and i still thought prongs were terrible (sigh) so i got him a no-pull harness! oh it worked really well (ok, not at all).....maybe that's why people think harness are so good?
(it didn't stop him from pulling. but a prong, he just walked nicely beside me, never had to do a thing. after that, i used the no-pull harness for running w/luc, and he was still new and showing some territorial aggression....i got yelled at once for correcting luc while he was wearing the harness....geez)
that, and perhaps people clearly don't understand the causes of cancer?

yeah, if your collar is made out of Radium

I signed up for a Petco class. Brought Hans on a prong collar. Teacher said don't bring him back with that next week. Next week I brought him on a flat collar. He was all over the place. Told the teacher I'm bringing the prong back. Never got another negative comment from her about it. Teacher was nice, but the class wasn't worth the time or the money.
I got slack from someone at a petco near me as I was trying to purchse a prong collar. The guy told me he was a trainer there, and followed me & my BF all the way up to the cash register trying to dissuade me from buying it. 2 funny things... 1) I really didn't even say anything to him to invite a conversation in the first place, and 2) maybe I should have listened to him(and waited) just so I could buy the HS ones LB sells because now I'm buying new HS ones anyway! lol
Oh- and my favorite part, was his last line "I train police dogs you know"
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
I'm impressed that you know something about radium. Are you a chemist? I have a degree in chemistry. I know that Ra tends to be found in rocks, but it can be anywhere. I was told that it can be found in groundwater too and we all could be drinking it. It is highly radioactive and lose energy by emitting radiation which causes cancer.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"
please try not to lump all chain store trainers in one big "they're so stupid" pot. Some of us (taught at PetsMart for 5 years) actually DO know something.
Look at it the other way around... how many "stupid pet owner" stories do you think I could tell you!!
