I have a 4 month old GSD puppy. I trained him to go relieve (pee and poop) him self on a weewee pad inside my apartment. Now I think it's time for him to go do his stuff outside, but when I take him outside he'll hold it in until we come back home. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks.
Why not start by taking a wee wee pad outside with you to start the association? Maybe even just a little bit will work. Take away the wee wee pad inside after the walk. Do you have him crate trained? That will help you control when he has to pee and can help you get him outside every time. If that is your goal.
Dogs usually relieve themselves after they wake up or after they eat.
Use this to your advantage and start taking him out after these two things. When he goes outside praise him with a "good outside". If you catch him in the act inside the house (ONLY IF YOU CATCH HIM IN THE ACT) Then give him a correction and tell him "bad outside" or whatever, then take him out and let him finish. Always praise him when he goes outside with a "good outside"
Before long, you'll have him trained to crap on the neighbors lawn
You'll be looking over your shoulder and telling him "hurry up outside"
jason the dog is paper trained . now you want kovy to scold the dog for going inside.I don't think that is a good idea. You and VanCamp are correct about everything else. The tricky part is that kovy lives in a apartment. Kovy is this an elevator building or can you go right out the door. The dog will go outside just keep walking. Usuallly the dog will find a favorite spot. Remember praise "good outside" Later on you will be surprised that when you say good outside the dog will pee on que.
You don't have to teach a dog to go outside per say, he'll go like you say, in time.
That however will not teach him to NOT go inside. You just tell me how your going to teach him that without some sort of correction please.
Vince,
We have to start here and now with what we have to work with. Throw away the paper on a weekend when you have a few days to work on this. A crate is a good idea too, when your not around to keep an eye on him.
I would do it just like you and Vancamp said. Keep the dog in a crate take him outside after sleeping, meals and play time. Then back in the crate. Throw away the pee-wee pads.Jason now I will agree with you. If the paper is thrown out and the dog makes in the house a correction is in order.Kovy only if you catch him in the act.Ideally it would be catching him in the act and taking him outside while doing it. This would be impossible for you.

I think it would be quicker, easier and better to get a crate and start completely from scratch rather then trying to correct whats wrong here. Vince is right. Paper training just screws the dogs head up. I say get a crate and start from scratch. In a couple of weeks or so you'll see results. These guys are all correct about the times the pup needs to relieve himself(not that they need me to justify their advice!Who the hell am I!LOL)
That sounds like a good way of going about it to me as well. Being that it was previously OK, a firm correction might not be the best way to go. However, I think some sort of corrections will be necessary to proof this, even if we are only talking about a "verbal" correction, followed by an escort to the new propper place when you catch him in the act (and you will).
"get a crate and start from scratch" Good idea Chuck
