We have a litter of 9 GSD pups that are 9 days old. This is mom's 4th litter, the previous ones with no isssues. The 1st week, they all looked great. The last 2 days, they are feeding constantly and 2 pups had to be tube fed, as they can't get enough from her. The vet had trouble getting milk out. She is filled with milk, but it seems the teats feel tight and dry. We are using warm compresses, but it only seems to help for a few minutes. Any thoughts? We are giving her tons to drink, and have increased her food dramatically.
I do NOT want to have to tube feed 9 pups if I can avoid it.
Thanks! -Barb
Nothing. He just felt her teats and said to use warm compresses on them. We've been doing that, and they seem to produce milk for a few minutes, then it gets harder to get any.
We also tried bottle feeding Ed's formula. They seem to like the taste, but don't stay on the bottle for more than a few seconds. They are starting to seem lethargic.
did the vet rule out mastitis? she could have even a mild form of it, but the infection can get worse and led to gangrene
how is her behaviour? does she seem bright? is she showing signs of an infection/fever?
edit: also, if the pups are still feeding from her, and she has even a mild mastitis - then they're feeding on something that's all bacterial, which i can't see being good.
A damp wash cloth under a heating pad (I set it on high and it wasn't too hot for me, but the dog will let you know if it is uncomfortable) for at least an hour several times a day, or overnight and it cleared up mastitis in 2 days or less, which is much faster results than I ever got on antibiotics. If the milk is yellow don't let the pups nurse, it can kill them.
Thank you all for your replies. We took mom and all the pups to the vet. He checked blood for infection (none) and checked teats. She's just not producing enough milk. He gave her a shot of oxytocin, and she swelled up with milk. The babies all nursed at the vet. Unfortunately, the effect of the shot doesn't last long, so he gave me 4 shots to give her at home when needed. I am using warm compresses and loading her up on fluids. I am also going to be tube feeding one pup (only until she's string enough to nurse herself) and supplementing mom's milk with Ed's formula with bottle feedings on the other 8 pups.
The good news is the vet checked each pup and said they look great and it was good we got them in to see him.
I'll let u know how we make out!! Thanks again. You guys are the most knowledgable dog people out there! -Barb
