My dog is a 48 lb cocker spaniel and we have been feeding raw for for almost 1 month. He eats once per day,he at canned salmon for the first time on tuesday and he had red meat, beef shank for the first time on Wednesday and today he had his regular 2 1/2 chicken backs ( that was around 7:00)
He was ok all night but 2:30am this morning he has really runny stinky diarriah(sp?). I bought a can of 100 % pumpkin the other day to keep on hand. I have no idea how much to give him. I started with 3 tablespoons. He wasn't crazy about it so I just opened in mouth and made him eat it. Should I give more/less ????

Shannon, good for you for starting raw, but I would probably introduce new foods to him a little more slowly. He had two new items in two days, and it sounds like his tummy wasn't ready for it.
I would go back to feeding chicken for several days until the runs clear up, and then introduce new food one at a time. You might want to try half fish and half chicken, or half beef and half chicken at a meal.
Also, I would try feeding him twice a day. That way his tummy isn't bombarded with not only lots of food at once, but a big meal of new food.
Pumpkin is very good for loose stools. I would probably back it down to 1-2 tablespoons because of his weight and see how it goes.
Keep an eye on those runs, and if they don't ease up, you may want to look elsewhere for a problem, but I really think it has to do with too much new food at once.
Good luck.
As you think, so shall you be. |

Hi Jan, Thanks You for the advice. My dog is an inside dog and NEVER goes to the bathroom in the house.
I woke up in the middle of the night to a "smelly" treat. After I gave him the pumpkin he didn't have anymore problems and I cleaned up and went back to bed.
When we woke up, I checked on him and he was his normal alert hyper self..... .
I left the house for work at 6AM this morning so I am going to leave work early to go and check on him. I don't want any more "treats" to clean up when I get home.
I was thinking of backing off the food for a little bit and like you said, go a lot slower. I was thinking of giving him a little rice for dinner depending in how he does today.
Thank You again for the advice..
Shannon

I think that's a good idea. You could make the rice mushy and boil some of your chicken to go with it. Don't give him a ton of it - just enough to hold him over tonight. I would then give him some more again tomorrow morning just to make sure everything is fine. If so, you can start back on raw chicken tomorrow night for the next week or so and then gradually add in your new foods.
As you think, so shall you be. |

Hi Shannon,
I feed my 3 dogs raw as well but when I first started feeding raw I noticed they had a hard time when I fed them Beef (meaning loooose stools) . So I just stuck with Chicken, turkey for awhile then down the road when they had been on it for awhile I stared to throw in some beef once in awhile and they did better with it.
Good Luck

Hi Shannon,
The three table spoons if fine. I have fed pumpkin to both my dogs 22 and 34lbs and use about 2-3 tbsp. The pumpkin was usually mixed with their food.
Kathy is correct the runs could be from the richness of the beef or excess fat (can easily cause runs). The other reason could be to much bone. Are you feeding any meat in addition to the chicken backs? Sometime when feeding a lot of bone, the runs can precede the harder white type poops.
By the sound of it your dog is no longer a pup and you could fast it for a day to let it clear out it's system instead of doing the rice and chicken.

Hi Guys ~ Thanks you very much for your help & insight. The pumpkin really did the trick with the diarrhea. I ended up with a big steamy "pumpkin" in the back yard but it was at least formed. He is now back on the chicken and seems to be doing good.
I am finding that feeding Raw is just a lot of trial & error as each dog is different.
In answer to your question Jonathan, I have been feeding mainly chicken backs. I have experimented with other things such as turkey necks & pork necks, fish and then the red meat once chicken liver (which he will not touch unless partly pan seared) ground turkey, but primarily, I use just the chicken.
Do you think that may be my problem ?

Primarily chicken is fine, but I would add in some breast meat or maybe even quarters. I feed backs and necks, but I add in ground turkey, chicken, buffalo, rabbit, pork or venison. IMHO, there is not enough meat on the backs to feed them without added boneless meat.
I like variety (as do my dogs), since feeding all chicken is kinda like throwing the same kibble in a bowl year after year. I notice if I start feeding too much of one meat, I start to get these "looks" when I set the dished down and they first smell it.
Kinda like "not chicken agggaaaiiinnnn."
