Kevin;
I prefer the Dogtra brand:
1. reastat to adjust incrementaly the stimulation
2. the actual sensation of the stimulus is pleasant
3. I prefer using the nick button
4. reliability, of stimulus, I push the nick button on each collar, 50 times to verify
5. Dogtra stands behind its product
Numbers 1 and 2 are of extreme importance in my training, some this is why I prefer the Dogtra brand of the others.
Hope this helps.
Roni
Make sure the manufacturer will stand behind their product. I have gone through multiple transmitters (they wouldn't communicate with the collars anymore). Thankfully, the manufacturer was GREAT about replacing the transmitter... no questions asked.

I use Tritonics myself. Innotek I find to only be about one nudge (and not much of one) above Petsafe. I question their waterproofing, quality construction, and lasting power.
use the Innotek Ultra Smart something or other....
My dogs swim daily in the summer-and sometimes in winter too-and it IS waterproof. (the ultra smart is-the whole collar is one piece-plastic)
I have 9 levels to choose from, a tone button, and a boost that takes it up 2 levels. The read out is digital-and i can use the same remote for several collars.
I have not noticed any inconsistancies with this collar-that doesn't mean other styles made by innotek haven't messed up.
I am shopping around for new collars for the others-a 3-4 dog model-and would love to stay with innotek-but i can't find a model for that many dogs in the same style.
SO i guess i am saying-each brand of collar will have a model that isn't reliable-and models that are great.
(it says micro-it meand the collar is sleek and small-not that is it for small dogs)
i can post a pic of one of my dogs wearing it-if that will help any.
As a side note-somewhere else on here, we were talking about remote trainers for small dogs(like our chis), and i just saw hat Innotek makes a lap dog sized e-collar.....i might check that out and let you all know.

I have the Innotek Ultrasmart and if I had to do it again I'd probably go with a Dogtra.
The thing I like about it is, as Mallory said, the collar is sleek and the box is small, not bulky.
It has a "Smart Fit" option that I've never used.
No problems with water.
On the few occasions I've needed to stop my dog in his tracks this collar did not do the job. It's fine for everyday minimal-distraction use.
I do not like the hand-held transmitter. Buttons are small and made of flimsy plastic. I had to replace the transmitter because the stim button tore...making the whole unit useless.
Innotek did replace it free of charge and they were easy to deal with.
Yeah-i am not saying it is the best collar out there. Not by far.
But if i only have a certain amount of money to spend on an e-collar for my pet dog to lets say keep him from rolling in deer poop and to reinforce our recall on hikes-, and need a good solid waterproof collar-i am going with this one.
This collar for me has stopped him in his tracks before-and has kept him still long enough for me to reach him when he was about to fight another dog.
Not saying it hasn't messed up on someone else though. And personally-i LOVE the handset. But that is just me.
All that being said-this is for my pet dog-and though quality is very important with all dogs-i am not as strict as i would be if i were investing in lets say a working dog.
This was my first e-collar, i wanted something easy to use, it is. I love the sleek design, and that the band isn't cloth. I like all the features on this collar-but i know i can get the same with other brands.
The only real reason i wouldn't buy this particular collar again is that the band and box are one unit-and i want to use the cinch-it for a more exact fit for my other dogs.
Mallory;
I work with a large majority of pet people. I believe every dog deserve the best we can give them. And YOU deserve to get what you pay for. Money is hard to come buy and a good e collar is a wise investment. I continue to evaluate all the collars on the market so I can make the best decisions possible for all the dogs and people I instruct. I want a positive attitude towards training with all my dogs and clients and I have found by far the best results with the Dogtra collars. Dogtra collars are completely waterproof also. My only complaint is I need a unit for small dogs and I won't use the Innotek, too uncomfortable a sensation for the small dogs. IMO
just a warning; something that probably wouldnt happen with a more expensive brand but I had Petsafe no bark collar that went Berserk ON my dog =NOT GOOD. it just started randomly shocking him, he squeaked so it kept escalating and he was in fight for your life mode. thank heaven he was on a leash so i could drag him toward me to take it traumatized both of us, though I was sure not to make a deal over it for his sake. so test those things regularly!
