I just spent a bunch of time reading about DE at the Wolf Creek ranch site, as I've been looking for a better wormer for my cats. This thread was the first I'd heard that DE is good as a wormer (I wasn't at all familiar with DE other than having seen it in threads here about flea infestations).
Anway, it treats roundworms, whipworms, hookworms and tapeworms, as well as other parasites.
I am going to be switching to it for all my animals. The site recommends feeding it year round, which I plan to do. The only question I still have is how to feed it without it absorbing other supplements (my original plan would be to feed with food, but that's where they get their supplements, and DE is good at absorbing various metals and other imputities). Obviously, I have more research to do<g>.
As far as Steven's question, yes, it is used instead of any chemical wormers, period. I don't know much about chemical wormers, either (I've used homeopathic ones, which are a PITA to administer), but apparently, the worms can develop resistence to a particular wormer, and so often, breeders use different chemical wormers on their litters for each worming. What Wolf Creek reports is that these chemical wormers can weaken the puppies' resistance to parvo, as they seem to challenge the immune system quite a bit. The DE doesn't do that, and puppies that are wormed using DE are better able to handle parvo, if they get it at all.
A bit more information for anyone who is interested...
I mentioned in my first reply that I had some concern about how to feed the DE without interfering with any supplements. I got a reply from Wolf Creek Ranch that said, "DE detoxes heavy metals and will sweep some bad bacteria and viruses out of the system. It can just be added to daily food."
That is why I am reluctant to use conventional wormers on my puppy. I am trying to build her immune system up, not weaken it with chemicals. Being out and about who knows what shes exposed to, but being out is vital to the dogs development.
I figure that regular fecal centrifugal tests will determine if the DE is working or not!
