NO, rawhide is acky.
Not only can they cause an obstruction since they swell up to over twice their size in the dogs stomach, the crap they use to make them is not good either.
Kongs filled with peanut butter or cream cheese and then frozen are great!!!!

I think the general consensus is that they arent. there was a discussion about it earlier but to sum it up there were concerns with dogs choking on the slippery sticky pieces as they chew em off. also they expand in the stomach (they are dehydrated skin)..
After working with our internal medicine specialists, I can assure you, they are not very safe. As stated, they can become lodged in a dog's airways or intestinal tract...and anywhere in between.
I prefer to give my dogs carrots (they love them frozen, they are like a popsicle). Dehydrated chicken strips and sweet potato strips are good as well...you can make these yourself if you have a dehydrator.
If you absolutely must use rawhide...give it only when you are around to supervise and buy the compressed rawhide bones. They *typically* aren't able to get as big of chunks off at a given time.

Man, I really, really would recommend NOT giving it though....there are so many other, BETTER, things you can give dogs.
I use carrots as well and my dogs love em.

I have to agree that almost anything is better than rawhide.
There are beef straps (slow-roasted tendons and similar), pizzle, everlasting treat balls (right here on Leerburg) ... there are many options that don't have the bad track record of the rawhide treats.
I have labs and they are voracious. They are gone in minutes. thanks to all....that ends the rawhide.....BUT what about raw bones from the butcher OR are they the same?

Yeah Stacy, I agree with Connie and not giving them to voracious chewers. I give them to my dogs but that is because they are slow methodical bone cleaners and they do not try and crack the bones.
