My Chi's will do it sometime. Many of my Beagles (minimally vaccinated) do it, mostly in the summer and fall. They seem to do it most often after they have been beating the bushes and grass for rabbits. It hasn't ever affected their health so I don't worry about it. If they go on for longer than a few seconds I will distract them or startle them (kind of like with hick-ups) and it will stop it.
Based on what I have seen with mine I think it is related to dust or allergies more than anything. The allergy theory could be liked to genetics, I suppose.
People who have never seen it before think the dog is dying.
All my dogs do this after wrestling.
Or after getting into scraps.
Example:
Bart and Roxie playing, get too rough, stand-up to each other, have a stare down-i tell them to knock it off-they go back on all 4's, and reverse sneeze, then shake off-every time.
Any time they wrestle, when they separate, they reverse sneeze and shake. It's funny.
I just catagorize it as one of the many weird things my dogs do.

One of my papillons will have fits of this reverse sneezing quite badly. The longest one of these little fits has gone was 30 ish minutes. He looks uncomfortable and almost gaspy during it as well. When we went to the vet about it they said it was mainly due to impacts of size reduction in the breeding of these little guys.
In my little dogs I find that the shorter the neck the worse this sneezing becomes. It could just be my limited observation though. The only other dog I've seen with this routinely as bad as my papillon boy is a pug who is owned by a friend of mine.
My other two have had these on occassion but usually it's just a couple of weird hiccups and they're all done.
My Greyhounds have all done it; my Dobes never have. I'm not sure what causes it but every vet I've ever asked about it has said that it isn't anything to worry about and feels more or less like a sneeze to the dog. I know my Greys never seemed traumatized by it and it was something they did all of their lives. I, too, am curious though.
