his stool sample for the vet. He managed to reach it while I left him in the car. It was sitting in the back, and even though he had his harness on, he managed to get close enough to snatch it up, I guess. I'm not worried about the stool sample itself (I know that's harmless and believe me, there's more where that came from ), but what about the sandwich baggie it was in? Should I just make sure he can still poo without straining, etc?
I would make him throw up. Give him about 1/2 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide. That is how much it took to make my 55 lb female throw up. I mixed mine with chicken broth and my dog drank it. Why take a chance of a bowel obstruction and a $1000+ surgery.
MODERATOR NOTE:
Inducing vomiting is something to ask your vet (or the e-vet on call) about.
What size baggie was it?
DO you think he gulped the whole thing down in one piece or is he more likely to tear something up a little?
I can see how a quart size baggie swallowed whole with a decent amount of stuff in it would cause problem,
BUT
I can also attest that if its ripped or torn into a few pieces they pass without any problem.
I was a sandwich sized ziplock. I didn't see him with it, but when I got to the car, there were 2 very small pieces laying in the car. I have no idea if he ate the thing whole other than that, or chewed it up. But I do know that there was absolutely no trace of poo anywhere, including on him, so he must not have messed with it for long...
My vet called me back and said to watch him for signs of distress or lack of appetite, lack of pooping, etc, and he should probably pass it w/no problems.
I will probably be awake all night watching him for signs of distress.....
Even just the fact that there were two small peices in the car lets you know at least there are some holes in it so it wont act like a stopper in the intestines or gut, and that hopefully the poop will get broken down.
Can his own poop be further digested in his own system?
I realized I dont really know!
If it makes you feel any better Fargo pooped out a Hot wheel mini cooper ( a small one thank goodness!!) last week.
I am so careful making sure stuff like that is picked up. I had no idea he had eaten it so It totally freaked me out when it happened.
This is one of those things that only dog people would get...
I do not recommend googling poo reingestion digestion and not adding dog in the search then not paying enough attention to what you click on....I might be scarred for life, and I need sleep to prevent things like this!!!
OMG - now you made me want to google it....lmao!!! You're right about "things only dog people would get." I was thinking this a.m. that "You know you are a dog lover when you are walking around with a bag of dog poo in your pocket. Ha! I was carrying it in my hand, and came around the corner of the house where the contractors were working outside. I didn't want to be seen carrying a bag of dog cr@p in my hand, so I stuck it in my pocket. Cause, you know, that's so much better.....
P.S. Let me clarify...I stuck it in the pocket of my jacket, not the back pocket of my jeans
