The only thing that might confuse the dog is if the decoy puts the dog into defense during the trial (if, in fact it is all prey scenarios). Basically, if he sees nothing but prey all the time and is suddenly put into defense then it would possibly confuse any dog not prepared for it.
When you later start working up his defense then you'll find he's going to be more intense when challenged if he has the genetics for it. With the intensity may come control issues if you don't do your homework.
I plan on doing a lot of research into defense and waiting until he's older.
Considering he has yet to back down to anyone, dog, animal, human, he seems like he's pretty solid and confident for only 13 months. But I will continue to wait, as to not over stress him when it comes time to do the work.
I believe a dog should be prepared for the things a person will do to try and put a dog into defense, but I don't see any neccesity in pushing a dog into defense just for the sake of pushing the dog into defense. If the dog stays in prey but is very intense about biting, and will bite anything you point at whether it's a sleeve or flesh, is just fine by me.
A dog biting in prey hurts just as much as a dog biting in defense.
The best police dog I've ever worked was a severely dominant prey dog.
