I have a potential puppy buyer, who really wants to get a puppy right now, however, he and his wife have 2 vacations planned in the summer (one in June and one in July). They have a friend who comes over and lets their current GSD's out, plays with them, and feeds them once a day. However, this wont be sufficient for a puppy that is 5 months old (how old it will be at that time).
He asked me if I have ever boarded a puppy at that age, as they are worried about the pups psyche (and their own).
What would you all suggest to him?
I asked him if they have anyone that could house sit and stay there while he is gone, but he hasn't responded yet (I'm assuming they thought of that already).
Their oldest GSD is 10, and suffering, and they have to put him down soon...possibly in the next week or so.
These people would be an awesome home...so I would love for this to work out.
I am not a breeder but I recently rescued a pregnant dog - so I raised a litter of pups too.
I had this exact issue with Christmas holidays. What I did and maybe what you can do if you are willing and able, board the puppy yourself over the holidays. (I mean take him back to your house/kennel where you can look after him while the owners are away).
I would definitely not consider boarding one of my dogs in a kennel. My puppy is 6 months now and I think it would definitely create a huge set back with him. And you are correct that their current setup would not be enough attention for a 5 month puppy, especially if they are following the recommendation to raise the pup separate from their adult dog. They would have no control over whether this is done properly.
It would be sad to lose out on a great home because of this issue, so hopefully you can work it out!
Boarding strangers dogs is one thing, boarding your own dogs progeny is another, I think. On subsequent vacations, the puppy will be old enough to be looked after by the neighbor. This would be only because the dog is just a baby.
Right...well, I just made the offer, will see what he says. It would actually be fun to have a puppy return to us twice in the summer. LOL
Thanks for your help on this...Like I said, I was thinking it, but needed that push from someone else that they would offer the same thing.
They would be a great home...their current dog has had hip dysplasia since he was a year old...and had surgery at that age. He is now 10 and not doing well...their other GSD is 3 I think...female, and they fear will be very lonely when they have to put Shadow down. These people take their dogs all over, car shows, etc...they love their dogs!!! So it is one of those homes, you don't want to miss out on...know what I mean?
