Kodee has recently earned much more freedom in our home (he's a housedog). As a result, I guess my 2-1/2 yr old now thinks Kodee is never supposed to be in his crate, so he lets Kodee out everytime I turn my back. Kodee is great w/the kids, but it is unacceptable for Kodee to be let out unless I say so. Obviously I am trying to teach my son not to do this. But, he is a persistent little booger, and I wanted to know if anyone knows of a good way to child-proof the slide-type latches on a dog crate door.
Kodee is too heavy for me to simply turn the crate door against the wall everytime he goes in the crate (it would be a P.I.T.A. even if he wasn't so heavy).
Any suggestions? I need something that is not too much of a pain for me, but that will work to deter a very crafty 2 year old boy.
Would a caribeaner work to hold the latch in place?
Why don't you try it? they cost a dollar at our local farm store.
this is a kid problem, not a dog training issue. I raised a son in a home with many dogs, all in crates at one time or another and never had one instance of him releasing a dog. It's not that hard to figure out.
You can always get a vari kennel, most kids can't negotiate the latch on those til they are much older.
