I hope this is the correct forum. It was this or breeding.
I think my pup is in heat. I plan on having her spayed but wanted to wait until she was at least 1 year old. She is about 7.5 mos.
I didn't realize they could go into heat this young. Any advice for making this more comfortable for her and for me?

Yes. Doggie diapers will make it MUCH less messy for your home and less cleanup for you.
I had one that I bought at SuperPet that was a cloth one you can wash and put a maxi pad in. You can also get disposable ones.
7.5 months is a standard age, I have read anything after 6 months is normal, though we had an intact GSD female we raised for the Leader Dogs, we gave her back at 12 months and she still hadn't had hers.

Thanks, Angela. The closest pet store is about two hours away, so I will probably have to rig up something here. I will call the vet offices today and see if they have anything.
Is there anything in particular I should watch for?
I have only experienced this once and that was years ago. I just remember what a mess it was (large dog).
Any food changes, etc.
ETA: It should have said she still has NOT gone pee or poo since 3am.
I suspected this last night as I had let her lie on the bed and found the stain.
She woke me up at 3 am to go pee (she NEVER gets up thru the night).
Then at her regualar out time this morning she still has gone pee or poo.
I fed her some ground turkey.

I was able to find some doggie diapers.
She has not peed since 3 am.
She ate her ground turkey for breakfast but has not had water.
She is also just laying around and not her usual playful self.
Is this normal?

I have been through exactly one heat cycle, so hopefully someone who actually knows what they are talking about will post, but I can say that I didn't notice any change in my dog's behaviour. Maybe she was a little more playful, or maybe not. I don't think she was noticeably different.
her vulva was really swollen. If your dog's isn't, maybe it's something else?? Hope not.

It is swollen. She finally peed at about 5 this evening. She ate her dinner and now is going to potty kinda normal, maybe a little bit more.
But, she is just not very playful and usually she never runs out of energy.
I hope this is all normal.
Thanks for the reply.

The dog is not eating very much at all.
I have her on raw. She didn't eat yesterday morning or evening meal. I gave her a little bit of cooked meat finally because she didin't eat since the night before.
This am I went back to ground chicken. She turned it down, too. I even put a little bacon grease on it hoping she would eat. Finally she ate about 1/2 of it.
Is this normal for when in heat?
Also, still low energy except for sniffing when she goes out.

Hi Nora,
I've been through 4 heats with one dog, and one heat with another, both border collies. I never noticed any behavior change, but I guess I never was looking for any change. I wouldn't worry, lots of dogs go through heats. Maybe dogs have cramps like humans do, or just don't feel well.
Keep us posted on how your pup is doing.

Nora, I have absolutely no experience with a bitch in heat, but have you called your vet? Perhaps there's something else going on in addition to her being in heat? The irregularity in her peeing seems odd...

Thanks for the replies. I should have said in the previous post that her peeing is back to normal after that one day.
I hate to be the person to go to the vet and be told my dog is just in heat. I have a tendency to over-react sometimes.
She just seems low energy and isn't eating real good. But where I just started her on raw a few weeks ago, I didn't know if it was the food or the heat.
I have only been able to get her out for walks sporadically this week due to the following of stray dogs.
And then, part of her problem may be the diapers in the house. She thinks she can't walk in them, so when she has one on she just mostly lays.
She did some of her ob training this afternoon and was playful, then, so she is probably alright.
I just need re-assurance, I guess.
I am going to offer her ground beef for supper and maybe this will be more apetizing.
Unless a red flag hits me in the back of the head, I will have her spayed after this.
