We're getting ready to receive our dog in May and I was looking at the puppy equipment and wondering what I should get for an 8 week puppy in terms of leashes in collars. Basically what are the essentials?

LB's leather drag line and the leather leashes are fantastic.
I used the puppy hemp collar...really liked it. When your pup gets older the leather collars are really nice. The long line is also a must-have, IMO, for when he's older.

Sarah,
Did you use the drag line for both walking the puppy and when you had it tether to you in the house? And what did you use to just take the puppy out to go potty?
Martingales are nice collars. They give a better correction than a regular collar, but not like a prong. I'd probably use it on a pup that's at least 5-6 mos old. That's about when I got it for my dog. She still uses it today.
I still love the drag line. When my dog was a pup I used it to tether, to do a quick potty-break, and eventually to drag. I still use it when a certain pooch needs a reminder not to run in the house, and when I go visit my sis who also has a dog in case I need to grab mine. The dogs get on well and know each other but don't see each other that often so the drag line is a good insurance policy.
With a pup I've found the most essential items to have are: flat collar, puppy leash, drag line and long line.
On the page that Sarah mentioned, the British Lead is a great collar and leash in one. Easy to put on for short little walks or to go potty or play in the backyard. The Martingale would be useful for the same thing, and it's a collar and leash in one also.
The 20 ft long line that Sarah mentioned is required, IMO. It gives the pup some freedom to run around outside without getting away from you.
A hemp collar as Sarah mentioned also, so you can attach the long line to it.
Don't forget bowls! And toys! And treats! Zuke's Mini-Naturals are wonderful, tiny, soft treats. My pup would do anything for those treats. You can find all that stuff on the link Sarah posted. If you're feeding RAW, you'll want some supplements, like the Grizzly Salmon Oil and vitamin E and C.
I bought a holee-roller for a young dog that I babysat this week while his owner was away (he just went home today :cry. He LOVED it!!
I just ordered the rubber puppy tug and the everlasting treat ball (see streaming video) and will definately buy a couple of the leather leashes (for my impending pup) after I pay off my recent shopping excursion at Leerburg and Clean Run.
Don't forget DVDs!!! And BOOKS!!! Gotta have some books....
