What I am doing/did with my pup is started with a foundation of eye contact. If you have a dog that will make eye contact and *find* eye contact, you can teach heel position in a snap.
For example, if I'm working with my puppy and I look at a spot 3' to his left, breaking the eye contact, he will move over to the spot where I am looking in an effort to regain eye contact, and I reward that.
If I was interested in teaching him to heel (I'm not yet), I would simply 'lead him with my eyes' into heel position, highly reward that position, and give it a cue word.
I would be teaching sits seperately from this and only add sits after the dog understands heel position.
Katherine, if that worked for you I'm all for it. If there was only one correct method to train obedience there would be only one video.(G) That said the method shown in my videos has worked for me in schutzhund for three different breeds and types. So for me, I guess if it ain't broke.
