A friend of mine has a Beagle about 1 3/4 years old that has been E-Collar trained by a National Company. They tell her that the dog should always wear the collar, for reliability. I was under the understanding that the E Collar was used until the dog responded when given the command, without having to use the stim, and then the collar could be removed. The only time the collar would be put on again is if the dog started slipping back into old habits, or if something new was needed in the dog's training. Which is correct?
The "National Company" probably knows that the way they trained the dog made him collar-wise. A dog that's collar wise will know when it's got the collar on and when it doesn't. I would imagine that the company didn't take the time needed to condition the dog to the collar.
That being said, many people do leave the collars on their dogs daily...on in the morning and off at night. I don't, because I don't have a dog that needs it, and there's a possiblility that it will irritate the skin if it isn't rotated. Not a big deal to rotate, but I don't need it daily so I don't bother.
It really depends on the dog and the needs of the owner/handler, IMO. But in your friend's case, my first instinct is that they gave that advice because they didn't take the time to condition the dog to the collar. I don't know who they are, obviously, but in my experience "national companies" don't do things the right way.
Hopefully the dog was trained to where it is not collar wise. My GSD loves to put it on as well as a prong or any other as he knows this means going to work or play. The dog needs to learn to listen all the time rather on or off. Just putting collar on when dog refuses and then gets corrected he will become collar wise know it has to listen or get stim and can get away with it when off. I would try working the dog in a no distrction area with it off and see if you get good results. than do the same with it on.If you see it do better with it on try and use other form of corection so it does not associate the collar with obeying. mix up corections with E-collar verbal, prong etc. This will teach it he needs to listen. or gets a corection. Hope this makes some sence did not want to make it to long .wish I could type
Dogs become collar wise because we teach them to be. I am familiar with people that use the e collar for the life of the dog. I also see people using head halters, prong collars, anti-jump harness, choke chains and various other tools that are meant to be used to assist people in teaching behaviors, but instead of taking the dog thru the total process of training they stay in the correction phase, in effect not teaching the dog anything. Dogs learn thru consistancey, so unless a behavior is taken thru the proofing stage, the behavior will fade.
