 Due for Rabies Shot

My 2 yo is due for her rabies shot, so I was going to get a titer done instead. Cost of vaccination $30, titer cost $150. Yikes huge difference in price. Needless to say I did neither till I figure out what I want to do.
But after a conversation with my vet, he told me a titer does not hold up in court for a dog bite, so the dog would have to be quarantined. Further into the conversation we start talking about 1 year versus 3 year vaccinations. He tells me eventhough it's a 3 year shot the Dr. may say it's only good for 1 year on the certificate so it would require you to vaccinate the pet each year (for dog license). This makes no sense to me, please shed some light on the subject.

PA state code requires a 3 yr vaccine.
Under section 16.63 (5)(i), the vet must
Keep records that indicate ... The name, type by duration of immunity, lot number, manufacturer, date of purchase and date of administration of the rabies vaccine.
If the vet is making up his own vaccination labeling, he can and should be brought up on charges by the state licensing board.

i am in a similar boat, mine are up for rabies, and i know it is required by law, bbuuuttttt.......i am just not sure. Plus, they are doing that rabies study, and i really want to wait and see what they say before i vaccinate against rabies again.

I felt something was fishy with what Kimberly's vet said. Didn't sound right.

Kimberly, my understanding is that all rabies vaccines sold in the US are good for 3 years, but the labelling may differ. If it's labeled as a 1 year product, the vet will want you to vaccinate annually. It's a bunch of crap, IMO, and a way for your vet to make more money.
You can request that your vet order the 3 year vaccination...
Or you could look for a new vet...
(I am searching for the site where I found that info; I'll post it if I can find it again)

OK, here's the 2007 CDC Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control. If you scroll down to PART II, section B, it clearly states that all state and local animal control programs should be using a rabies vaccine w/ at least a 3 year duration of immunity, even though many are labeled for annual use. Makes no sense to me...
Part III shows the different rabies vaccines available in the US and how they are labeled.

I just re-read it, and I think the 3 year thing must be required for government-run programs only.

My pup has not had a rabies yet either, I think he had a reaction to his couple puppy shots so I've been hesitant -hes 9 months- the vet says here that the city requires you to get one every 2 yrs instead of three- so if I license my dogs like your suppose to I would have to have it done every 2 yrs which doesnt seem right.

My vet said that the first rabies shot was good for one year and then this year Tasha will get a 3 year.....It always sounded strange to me but since I show horses they require proof the dog has a rabies vacc to get on the grounds so I went along with it.

Hi, I am new here, and don't have a dog yet (need to wait till bout 2 years... stupid college...), but I am a wildlife biology undergrad, and plan on having my future dog come into the field with me for companionship as well as tracking.
I have read the vaccinoisis article here, but feel rabies is a big risk as well. To those without the vaccine, do you ever worry about potential bites from animals? In my area rabies is not unheard of...
Sorry if this is a dumb thought/question.
