Mr. Frawley mentioned on his podcast for Marker Training I believe that a famous Agility trainer Anne Brau uses this term "to split" to breakdown the command by components or parts and mark those until the dog start to recognize and then tie it together.
Does Ed specifically mention the "sit"? I don't think the sit would be one of those commands you would have to break down into components. Sitting is a natural act for a dog, especially from a stand. It just involves one motion.
I teach the sit by luring...I've never heard of splitting the sit. If you want to use the clicker, you'll click the second the dog's butt hits the floor.
I know it's demonstrated on one of Ed's DVDs...it's in the Basic Dog Obedience DVD, right?
Jorge, if you're having a hard time getting your dog to sit we'd be happy to help if you tell us what problem you're having (is he backing up, etc.)
I'm not sure if this covers it Jorge, but I went to a clicker training seminar and the way shaping was shown on the sit was working in small steps for the perfect quick, attentive sit by only clicking and rewarding for a better sit then the last one. He also didnt give the comand until it was the perfect sit that he was looking for.
Ok here it goes guys/gals, "Sparky" my 3yrd old neutered Jack Russell Terrier, I believe already knows the commands(sit/down)and when I tell him 'down' he'll look at me think about for a split second and boom get in the 'down' but then I tell him to 'sit' and his stuck, he can't make the transition to the 'sit' unless I then lure him with a treat into a 'sit' from a 'down' but when I'm doing the sit with the treat its a very snappy and quick 'sit' but when I'm on a walk and I tell him to sit before opening the door he'll look at me and NOT do it(his got a mini-prong)I then give him slight correction and he'll sit, the next open the door I go out first, then he comes out and again 'sit' and he'll do it but he'll take his time or I'll have to make a correction. So I'm convinced he knows the command already I've done this training for 2 weeks already with at least two hundred repetitions during this time, so I'm thinking his being defiant and still has issues with Pack Structure(I got Sparky on March 15th, could this be a factor as well). I purchased the "Pack Structure" dvd by Mr. Frawley and I'm following it to the tee and I've noticed some positive changes on Sparky already, I noticed his getting more use to me but the reason I want to teach him the sit to reinforce my pack leadership skills with him. I've already began Marker Training already and its working nicely.
So do I need to make my corrections more encouraging to him(I've read Mr. Frawley -theory of corrections, twice and listened to the podcast as well) I'm having trouble gauging how "hard" or "soft" he is in order to gauge my correction levels, work in progress guys/gals.
