Tonight, out of the blue, Delilah started coughing...like a honking type cough with a gag at the end. She is acting totally normal otherwise...playing, chewing her toys, eating, etc...
I think she may have kennel cough...
I have been super careful about taking her out...and where I take her...
Evander was here (the puppy that was returned to me)...he was fine but had his shots on April 3rd and I'm sure they vaccinated for this...could the virus of shed or something and made Delilah sick?
My poor baby...she sounds terrible.
She has a vet appointment tomorrow and was going to get her 2nd DPv...now I'm thinking we should wait and just pay the vet a visit.
Is there anything I can give her to help her rest? Human cough medicine?
She turned 12 weeks old yesterday.

Hi Karla,
Your description sounds like kennel cough to me but it would be wise to have a vet confirm it. My dog got kennel cough from coming in contact with a just vaccinated dog back in January. Here is a link to that thread.
Kennel Cough thread
My understanding is that a dog can shed the bordatella virus for 24-48 hours after vaccination -- Evander may have been the culprit.
It does sound terrible, but other than limiting exercise/activity, it ran it's course in about 3-5 days. You may want to ask your vet about the dosage for cough medicine.
I think I felt worse about the whole kennel cough ordeal than my dog did.

Thanks...she did cough a lot last night...which is strange, because you would think she wouldn't because she was at rest???
She just ate and is acting fine...we go today at 4pm.
What about her last DPv? SHould I hold off if she has KC?

Okay, just found this on the vaccine:
"Dogs that are vaccinated can also shed the virus and cause other dogs to become mildly infected and show mild signs. This shedding usually lasts less than 72 hours. In addition, it takes up to 4 days after vaccination for dogs to develop protection. When you combine these facts, you will see why I strongly recommend that a dog not be given intranasal vaccine within 72 hours of coming into contact with other susceptible dogs. Do not give the vaccine the day before a dog show, boarding, etc. Try to give at least four days before contact with other dogs, and preferably 7 days."
Evander was vaccinated on April 3rd in the afternoon and came to my house on April 7th in the afternoon. So that was 4 days exactly. Do you think it could have still been shed at that time? That would have been 96 hours later.

YES! Don't give any vaccines(whether she has kennel cough or not)until she is completely free of symptoms. Waiting a few weeks should not make any difference.

IMO, yes, I would lean strongly toward Evander shedding the virus to Delilah.
I also agree with Sarah to NOT vaccinate Delilah until all her symptoms have resolved completely...and then some.

it even says on the vaccine package to NOT vaccinate sick dogs. If your vet pushes it, i would politely point that out, and then leave.
When i got those pups, they were barely alive, and they were given rabies AND a 8 in 1 shot, all at the same time! I was furious. And then the shelter staff was all concerned when the next day, they were both showing parvo symptoms......
i too would wait before giving the booster, like, a week or even 2 weeks after ALL symptoms go away.

Took her to the vet...no fever and her lungs/heart sounded fine...she would barely cough for him when he put pressure...so he seems to think it is a mild case...although it was very loud last night and this morning.
He said the timeline fits for her to have contracted it from the shedding of the vaccine with Evander, so that is most likely what happened.
He gave me a cough suppresent to give her only at night if needed...so will probably do that before she goes down for the night...hopefully it will help us all sleep! LOL
No vaccines until she is all better...
