I saw two shows on TV recently that got me wondering if dog people are fatter in general than the average person on the street. One show was about people and their dogs training for search and rescue and the other was about agility trials. Oh, and then there was the whippet lure course... Holy smokes! Over half of the women were huge! The majority of the men were overweight too but not as much as the women. Is this accurate? If it is, how can this be happening? I mean, we all excercise with our dogs daily and pay a lot of attention to what they eat, right?
I may regret bringing this topic up. It probably does not even belong on this forum, but I figure it never hurts to take a step back and look in the mirror. Last time I looked, I needed to loose 20 lbs.

Sadly, processed food and a walk around the block is good enough for a majority of the general population and that goes for their dogs too.
I am amazed at the mentality of many working dog people that scoop kibble and pay no attention to physical conditioning of their dogs.
As my signature says re: our dogs -- "they mirror us back to ourselves in unmistakeable ways"...

people are fatter on average do a search on sugar consumption over the past few generations. Maybe some dog people think barking out orders and watching their dog work is exercise.
But for me owning a dog is very relaxing. I find peace in the companionship and joy in the obedience and loyalty. Stong competition can be stressful
Maybe for some people stress out about their dogs more than they enjoy them and turn to food. You can easily spend a few minutes reading dog forums and come across some very high stung dog people.

Okay, I'll play .
I pay MUCH more attention to the needs of my kid, dogs and horses than I do myself. Maybe it's easier? My dog is lean and muscular, and I look kind of "weeble-esque" even though I DO spend a lot of time exercising with my dog. Maybe it's because my dog eats better than I do? Or maybe it's because he's younger and hasn't had children . Who knows. Weeble or not, I'm active, so maybe that makes a difference. I'm the only Weeble here so it doesn't carry over as a bad lifestyle thing. Phew

Human obesity can be attributed to saturated fat, excess portions, too little consumption of fruits and vegetables and not enough physical activity.
I lost my previous dog (my soulmate) at 15 years old -- she was purely my companion. I put just as much effort as far as feeding and meeting her physical activity needs as I do my current dog -- which happens to be a working line GSD that I am "working".
Any dog of mine is first and foremost my companion that I want to live a healthy and long life.

Face the facts my friends, most of us need to shed a few pounds, especially me. I have been a Physical Education Teacher for more than 20 yrs and I can assure you that not only are dog people fat but so are their children. Childhood obesity is through the roof. There are many reasons for this problem, but only one answer:
get up and MOVE.
I saw a great quote a few weeks ago that seems to fit in here pretty good.
"If your dog is over weight......
Then YOU are not getting enough exercise
Terry
Treat them like they are animals.
Train them like they are animals.
Love them like they are people. |

Whoa, I was going to make a couple of wisecracks about me being 48 and having a 30inch waist, but I think I better go do a few push-ups instead.
