HELLO EVERYBODY!....IM PRETTY NEW TO THE FORUM AND THE DOG WORLD....IM LOOKING INTO GETTING A MAL AND WAS JUST LOOKING FOR SOME FEEDBACK FROM MAL OWNERS OR PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THEM.....I KNOW THEY NEED LOTS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND MIND STIMULATION........WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THEM.....BOTH GOOD AND BAD.......THANKS FOR THE INPUT!
The big question I have is what are you looking to do with a Mal? I would not recommend a Mal for a green handler. Is this going to be a working dog, a dog that you live with in your home with a family, BOTH? From a SchH, PPD or PSD perspective the Mals I have seen have excellent drive and endless energy to work and do an excellent job. I just don't know how many of them can settle in a home with a family as well. I'm not saying there aren't any out there that can or do, I just have not seen them personally. The mals I have met I would not want to live with. For me, I can get almost the same drive and athleticism out of a working line GSD and still be able to live with them.
If you use the search function on this forum you will find that this has been discussed many times. You may find the information you are looking for there.
There is alot more to Mal's than their energy level. If you get a good one it comes with a whole range of other things to deal with besides exercise. NOT for an inexperienced or first time handler if you want a good dog. What are you looking to do with the dog, and are you going to stop typing in all capital letters in future?
Born and bred between them. Compete in Belgian ring with one and only last week a 6 month old pup managed to secure me a visit with the doctor while playing with the older one.
I heard, I think from Cindy, that they are similar to Dobs? I also get the impression they are very intense. Do they bond well with their owners/family?
Johan- how did you get sent to the hospital?
I too would love a Mal but I also like a dog that is like a partner, part of the family. Not interested in parking him in a kennel after working him.
Simply they were playing catch and i was hit from the left side at kneehight and i went down. Couldn't get up so i went to see a doctor nothing serious but still. With all my experience withe the breed they managed to get me
There are some very strong dobe's out there but you have to get into the old German breeding. Very rear bloodlines. These dobe's bond very well to the family but you will never have anyone else in the house when the dog is out. They have just too much civil aggression. How much experience do you have with dogs. Are you looking at spot? All these questions need to be asked before you buy the dog. FCI,NVBK, KNPV bloodlines? What breeder? There is a lot more to think about then just buying a malinois.
