Ok so I got this from a website and thought it was kind of far fetched. Opinions?
"Multiple aggressors: It is a fact that most crimes are committed by more than one person. The dog must be able to respond to more than one violent aggressor and defend against such attacks. The ability for the handler to control the dog becomes more important so we build the control on the dog for this type of situation."
I don't know if I can post this, but since I'm not mentioning the site I thought I could, If not I apologize.
Yes Sandy. I think it's difficult enough to find a real PPD that will actually engage one person in a real situation. Maybe I'm just ignorant but to engage multiple attackers seems like something out of a movie. Imho.
I saw it being trained with a previous trainer with a dog, just beginning to learn. That also became one of my training goals for my dog - attack on at least 2 aggressors.
Basically, and I only saw it done once in the beginning phase, there were 2 aggressors, the dog was sent on the one closest. When the 2nd aggressor advanced toward the handler, the dog released the 1st guy and attacked the 2nd one. Back and forth like that.
This is a very common scenario in PSA. Often two aggressors will attack. The dog will pick one while the other attacks the handler. The handler then recalls the dog to attack the aggressor fighting him.
Not unusual at all.

Edit reason: had to make the post make sense
Mike and Trevor, I suppose it could work in sport like PSA but these guys are selling supposedly "real" protection dogs that will engage multiple assailants at the same time.
PSA is not for real, it's sport and in training you can get a dog to do just about anything, but when you sell these dogs as the real deal then people's well being are put in jeopardy because of false sense of security that their dog can do just about anything. Jmo...
Are you willing to be the one to prove them wrong? LOL!
I guess we see this type of training so often that it is almost second nature to us. So I suppose that is why I don't understand what you find so difficult to believe about it. Yes, PSA is a sport. However, it is a sport that requires a REAL dog to excell. If a dog is quite civil he can do both.
You are probably correct in some respects. A dog will most likely not disengage one aggressor to fight another on his own. However, it is highly possible that a well trained PPD or PSD will out, recall, and reattack on the handlers command. What issue is present to deter a good dog from attacking multiple attackers?
