I found an article about the pros and cons to spaying and neutering dogs. It deals with females more than any other article I've read. It also made me aware that spaying and neutering can increase the adverse reactions to vaccines 30% for females and 27% for males It's a pretty scientific paper, but also explains what all those medical conditions actually are.

Ingrid, thank you so much for posting the link. This is exactly what I have been looking for, my female GSD is still intact. My husband and I are not going to breed her, but we don't want to spay her just for our convenience, so this article is very helpful. Thanks again.

Interesting. Especially the bit about prostate cancer risk going up in neutered dogs. Every vet I've seen has earnestly lectured me about neutering my dog to avoid prostate cancer.
Maybe I should print this out and wave it in front of them when they start?
Nice article.
It is good to read some academic studies on dogs. IMO to much of the information is he said she said. I forwarded that link to my vets, and some friends in vet school.
You are welcome Melissa. The conclusions I came to from reading this article is that the worst diseases associated with not spaying or neutering dogs are pretty easy to cure with surgery (which is to say delayed spaying or neutering) and that there are many long term health risks associated with spaying or neutering before the dog is fully mature.
This is a very nice, objective article; easy to read and understand. I found the the adverse affects on the growth plates very interesting, leading to hip dysplasia. I appreciate the window of 2.5 years for spaying. It seems the primary value to spay is the reduction of mammary carcinoma. It would also seem this would be an easily detected carcinoma, but I could be wrong. I don't see any true value to neuter.
Thanks so much for sharing that! I am printing it for future use.
