Kodee has a black patch on the back of his tongue that he has had since I got him. (I love it, BTW. ) But I've noticed lately that he has developed a "new" very small (maybe 1/2 the diameter of a pencil eraser) black spot near the front of his tongue. Is this normal, or something to be concerned about? I know their coat changes as they grow, so I'm assuming this is the same type of thing - just pigment changing as he matures. However, I just wanted to ask to be on the safe side...
kori, i've noticed recently that my jersey has also developed a "new" black spot on her tongue in addition to the one she already had (she's 5 years). it appears to me to be normal pigment change and just adds to her cuteness
My mistake. Sometime after developing a second black spot he developed a third one. So now he has three. I think all three were there by the time he was 2 years old, maybe younger, we didn't write it down
Today someone called me about one of the puppies I have for sale. There is a well known trainer in the area that only buys his dogs from Texas who apparently import from Germany. The woman watched an event of his locally. This man claimed he only purchased dogs from the Texas breeder and he claimed the only pure German Shepherd with pure German Bloodlines had a black spot on their tongues. I have never heard this before. My father in-law is gone but he bred and trained shepherds for years getting imports and he never mentioned the black spot either. my oldest shepherd has her parents papers in German and she has a pure German pedigree. I would like to know if this man is just full of himself or this is something that people have known for years.

Well, gee golly whiz. I thought my last dog was a GSD/ACD/coyote cross. She had one nice big black spot on the back of her tongue. You mean she was fooling me the whole time?
Your right Tracie, he's full of himself. Lots of dogs have black spots on their tongues. How do these things get started anyway?

While I think it's common of dogs in GSDs in comparison to oh say ... labradors. It's not really a sign of being a purebred anything. Even the lab/husky/gsd mix I had as a kid had those black spots.
