Ok I know a 3 12 month old should not be expected to come every time when called, he is not allow off leash when out unless he is in a fenced in area. here is the problem. When I need him to come in well thats all she wrote. He does in some part understand. His recall in the house is great. I do the follow and catch him but as far as he is concerned Im ending his play time period. I have had a few gsd people here that seem to think he is a VERY quick learner even for a gsd. We work on commands several times a day in short sessions. He learned his basics in an average of 2-3 tries thats in one session. His ability to remember is really good as well. This is the first gsd i have had in a very long time, i am used to the more strubbon akitas. Sometimes i think the smarter i am the more he outsmarts me. LOL. He has a bit of an independant streek in him and leaving out until he is ready to come in is out of the question. Just looking for any suggestions.

Tamar, I know that you joined before first and last names were required, but they are now. Would you please fix that?
The recall: There are many good recent threads addressing this, and I can link you if you have trouble with "search," but I can say right off that I never play keep-away (making the recall a game), that I don't call the dog in the teaching phase to end the playtime (I go get him for that, reserving the recall for now to be 100% great stuff), and that I NEVER call the dog if I have any doubt about his compliance unless I have a way to reel him in, because every time he does not comply is another time that he learns the recall is optional.
I have tried that (just walk out there and walk up to him to catch him without calling him. I go out to play with him then leave him to play without bringing him in so that he does not associate me going out there with him having to come in. I guess i'll just go back to basics and start over. As for my name I have gone into profile and it will let me change everything but my user name. Not sure where to go from there. Thanks for the idea's

P.S. The recall can be a lot of fun to train. Carry it over into the daily routine by using it for every good thing: meals, a rub, a game, a ride, a walk ....
