My German Showline GSD pup (Rocky) is now 12 weeks old.
Can you please tell me when can puppies can start climbing up stairs independently? I know this would differ for each pup, but I would still like to know age around which they are fine with stairs
My living room is on the first floor of my house and that is where me and my family spend most of our time when we are home. Rocky too likes the living room a lot becasue there is a large open terrace attached to it from where he can see garden outside and be with us.
Unfortunately, either he is not confident in climbing the stairs, or he is not capable at this age.
If he is capable at this age, any suggestions on how to motivate him to climb up?
Until now, I pick him up and carry him to the first floor.
My showline (at 16 weeks old when I got him) didnt like stairs at first. So I picked him up and left him in the middle of the staircase and let him figure it out himself. It didn't take long for him to get the jist of it and he was flying up and down stairs like a pro in no time.
My other (younger) pups needed some help, but they learnt to climb early.
Hi Sekhar,
I would use treats or a fun toy to coax him up the steps. Put a treat on each step if he's really skiddish. My 10 wk old pup didn't like steps. If my pup refuses to go up or down, I make him start climbing with constant pressure on the leash, then he completes the rest on his own. I give a treat, and he does the same steps again without any trouble.
Depends on the dog and the stairs. Are they carpeted? If so, he should be able to climb them now.
I had a litter of four, little bit smaller than GSDs, one pup was going up and down by himself on my bare stairs by like 8 or 10 weeks, another was about 16 weeks and had to be coaxed with treats before he was confident.
Edit: they always went up by themselves, going down stairs takes quite a bit longer. I would pick them up and put them about 3 stairs from the bottom and let them go down the rest of the way, when they were doing that confidently I would place them 5 stairs up etc.
