I took my son and Kodee to the park for a walk today. There were a bunch of guys doing construction next door at the new pool. I noticed one of them stop to admire Kodee as we were walking past, and he asked if he could pet him. I stopped and said yes, and Kodee, bless his heart, automatically sat for him when the guy came up to pet him. (The training is working!) Anyway, the man talked about what a "good-lookin' dog" he is, and asked if he was neutered. I was thinking "No way this guy is gonna ask what I think he is." I said no, and he asked if I was going to neuter him, and I said "No, but I'm not planning on breeding him, either." Sure enough, he asked if I would be interested in breeding Kodee to his female. WTH? My dog could have a dozen medical problems, and he would never know it if I took him up on his "offer." Not to mention, I know nothing whatsoever about his female. I was really surprised. I told the guy nicely that I wouldn't want to breed Kodee, because I didn't know enough about breeding to know that i would be improving the lines, genetically. He said "Well, it wouldn't change his lines any (meaning Kodee's). Whatever! I just said "No, thanks" and he said ok. He was nice, not pushy, but still. What are people thinking.
I guess I'm too controlling, anyway. If my Kodee Bear had pups with anyone, I would be terrified that they would get into the wrong hands. As much as I love my dog, I would have to personally place any pups he would have, even if they were perfectly sound in genetics and temperament.
I thought the whole thing was just odd...but, I'll take it as a compliment.

Unfortunately, the mentality of that guy is the majority.
"If your dog isn't fixed, breed it".
One glance at my local online classifieds will confirm that. And many aren't even purebreds. We have tons and tons of shih-poos and malti-yorkies and boxer-labs and golden-doodles to prove it. But hey, they're cute right? Who cares what kind of home they get. They are worth 500-900 bucks a pop!
Makes me sick.
Edit: our classifieds are full of about a 60-40 mix of litter sales and 7-12 month olds. Go figure.

Had both of my GSDs with me one day when a woman stopped and asked me if I wanted to breed my guys with her white GSD. I simply told her that she could not afford the stud fee. When she asked what it was, I lied and told her it would be $5,000.00
She nervously smiled and said "No I cannot afford that, thanks anyway"

Oh, Terry! That makes me wish I had male dogs...just priceless!
I've had this happen to me before with both of my girls...I would consider one of them to be a quality GSD, but the other has health problems like you wouldn't believe. I think my favorite was when a guy told me he'd love to breed his male to Grace, but thought she was too small. She's 26" and 70ish lbs...huh...I think she's too big!

I get this a lot. One guy had a comatose Mal/GSD cross and wanted to breed her to my boy. Not! Had a bunch of American line GSD owners wanting the same thing. Not going to happen. When I explain to them why not, they just stare at me like a cow staring at a new gate. Thats usually how they look when I walk away.

I had a similar charming experience recently at work. I was checking out a customer with a ratty little shitzu and she asked me my opinion on several brands of dog chow we carried. I suggested a brand because my little dogs liked it.
She then asked how many little dogs I had... my answer 3.
What kind?
...Papillons
Boys or girls?
....Two boys, one girl.
Are the boys fixed?
(my blood pressure rises.) One is. One isn't.
Care to cross them to my little girl?...
no, it's not a papillon.
But designer dogs are so cute....
I only breed AKC.
She is akc.
Yeah... not the same breed.
Here's my number just in case you want to try.
I won't have a nice day."
It's much worse when I take Bodie or Booker out or bring them with me to work. Seems like every person with a dog under 5lbs just think that they and their Fifi would make beautiful puppies. I swear I even have a neighbor who would toss her chihuahua over the fence for a litter of little half papillon mutts.

This is why I answer those "Is that a German Shepherd"? questions with:
"no, sorry, he'a a Bulgarian Fluglehound" and I keep on walking.....

Yeap I got this all the time with Cajun, and my last Rott. Being in Milwaukee with a dog like Cajun was like walking through a crowd of 2nd graders with a tub of icecream.
Had a woman with a heinz 57 odd eyed one ear up one ear down corkscrew tailed wiry haired little whatsit practically demand the thing to be bred to Cajun. He was 5 months old at the time.
People don't get it. If they have something capable of reproducing it's like they feel obligated somehow to allow it to do so.
If it weren't for pit and bulldog type dogs being so popular everywhere I could have sworn I saw a little Cajun downtown last month. I think breeding was likely one of the motives for him being taken. Among other unspeakable things. Money drives many bad decisions, as does ignorance and just plain stupidity.

I had a guy who wanted to breed his pit-bull female (maybe pure, maybe not) to my mutt because he's a "Good lookin' dog". Well, yes, he is, but we don't need more pit-bull mixes in the area. Thank goodness my dog is neutered, so he couldn't try to push the issue.
