Dear Cameron: that is great news about him eating. I was wondering if someone gave him the command to eat, since he stood over the bowl drooling, excited. Sounds like he was waiting for your ok. Maybe try some different words for eating, aNd see what happens.
God bless you
He may have been, but I wasn't wanting to start guessing words to use - you never know what he may have been taught to do once given those commands. Sometimes they are given the same command for eating as well as attacking.
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
It kills me every time I see a dog with scars like Ivan's. I saw your video on pitbulls. Is there any way I can download it? I'd like to do some educating around here. We recently had a "pitbull attack" in the area. Personally I don't believe it. The same person also reported an attack a few years ago. That dog was an overweight, arthritic 14 year old heinz. Animal control said the only thing he's attacked was a food bowl but now it's a pitbull involved, a different AC officer and it's getting a lot more play because of that. Actually I should say attempted attack since nobody has shown any injuries.

I have the properties set on it so it can be embedded on a webpage, but not downloaded. The video is actually a part of the bully rescue I help manage, and I have another one that I am working on now. I can get you some info and contacts if you are starting to have a BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) issue being discussed. The AKC sometimes gets involved in these as well, depending on the case. This is another good one to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtQJdhpsTCU

I am late to this thread; however, first I want to offer my thanks to you, Cameron, for stepping in to help this boy and I agree whole heartedly with Sandy: He is SPECIAL!
Hopefully you will see continued progress with his eating, but my father gave me some "crazy" sounding advice to pass on. Let me just say, my Dad is closer to 80 than 70 and as the youngest of 13 was in charge of his family dogs in Ireland. I can honestly say I have never seen anyone handle a dog the way he does. It is a gift. Thus as crazy as this sounds, I will pass it on.
First, make sure your new pup is not paw shy. Then blend some ground chicken and giblets with broth to a pasty consistancy and spread it on his paws. He should lick himself clean. He also suggested if you have not already done so, that you have his mouth and teeth checked; abusive owners have a tendency to kick and it might actually be painful to eat. How sad!
I want you to know, I took a hiatus from rescue work to recoop but I'm starting to rethink my decision....thanks Cameron
That's another great video. I like the analogy about chickens and cock fighting. I just wish I could get some of that burned onto DVD. We're still in the third world out here. Internet is dial up or wireless only and most people don't even have a computer, especially the older folk. They do have DVD players though.
No specific talk of BSL but after this incident a number of people have made comments like, "Pitbulls are bred for fighting and if you aren't fighting dogs you don't need to own one" and "Someone ought to shoot pitbulls on sight". It only takes one politician with an agenda to start the ball rolling. That's why I was thinking about a little preemptive education.
