I have an 18 month old Shepherd. I have had him for 9 days. Over the last couple of days he has had a pudding like diarreha. This morning he barely ate. However, he will eat treats. Just a few minutes ago he was chewing on a rug in his crate. I gave him a verbal "leave it" and he did. But, a few minutes later he started hacking. I went in to check on him and he had thrown up a yellow foamy type fluid. I was thinkning hair ball. But with the diarreha, I don't know anyomore
He is still very active and does not act sick or in any pain.
When I got him I did not have the food he was on "diamond dog food". Never herd of it, so I went with healthy choice dog food.
I was thinking that the move and the new food has put his stomach in an uproar. I did give him Pepto Bismol this morning. I gave him the adult dose.
Anyone have an opinion. I am calling the Vet in the morning. i will most likely have a stool sample done.

Yes, try to collect the first fecal of the day to take to the vet's even if you cannot get in there with the dog first thing.
Barely eating -- would that be normal or a symptom?
Is he drinking OK? Hydrated? Peeing?
Empty stomach can result in the yellow frothy vomit.
He is not restless, anxious, etc., right? (And diarrhea for a couple of days isn't something that makes me think of bloat.)
Do you have white rice? Can you overcook some (to a porridge-like consistency) and give him some later on, after his gut calms down a little with a fast?

I start off at the first sign of diarreha in an otherwise healthy dog by fasting the dog for 12-24 hrs no food, but make sure he has water available. Then I start giving them small meals of boiled chicken breast and white rice or boiled hamburger and white rice every few hours for the next day and then, if things seem to be going well, gradually work back into their regular diet over the next couple of days.
An abrupt switch in food might have caused this, or it might be something else, so do check in with your vet in the morning.
What brand is the healthy choice dog food? You can probably be doing a bit better - something like Canidae or Innova is a much better choice for kibble IMO.
As far as the vomiting, he could have swallowed something -especially if he's chewing on rugs, or it could just be bile from an empty stomach.

BTW, I'd be careful about the fluids after days of diarrhea..... even baiting water if necessary.

He has not eaten since this morning and it was only a few bites. He still is very active and wants to play. But, not restless or anxious. He is drinking water and peeing fine.
I will give him some white rice in a bit and see if that helps.
With is new home and new food, I would imagine it is upset stomach. But, i will check with the vet in the morning.
Thanks for the advice...

I think you are on track with the change of setting and food.
Whenever I get a new foster dog, this usually happens in the first 3-4 days then resolves itself with the better quality food and predictable routine, along with exercise.
I haven't heard of "Healthy Choice" dog food. Try and get him a healthy kibble such as Canidae or Innova, it will help a lot. Plain canned pumpkin will help diarrhea too.

I took him to the vet this morning. Fecal sample was negative. They did see some infection in the intestinal tract. They believe this was due to the food change. Heart and Lungs all good. He gave me some medicine for the diarreha. And I am mixing in cooked white rice and chicken broth with his food.
I was told he weighted About 100lbs when I got him. Today he weighed in at 84 lbs. You can see him getting a little thin around the hind quarters. The vet thinks this due to the move, food change, dirreha issue. I think with the medcine, stopping the diarreha and mixing in the rice will help him get his weight back.

The idea of the bland rice diet is to soothe an inflamed gut as well as bind up the bowel some.
I'd give him at least a day on the rice-gruel diet ONLY (no regular food) and then add in some all-white poached chicken.
I would give no regular food until I saw a formed stool.
What I would want is to reduce the gut's inflammation, not worrying too much about balanced diet until that happened.

Connie,
Rice worked great....He now has formed stool. He did lose about 15 lbs over the last two weeks.
I was actually thinkning about feeding him twice a day and adding the rice both times.
Any suggestions?
