My 2-1/2 yr old GSD has always been lean -- 85 - 88 lbs. -- I switched to Honest Kitchen and lots of raw meat, supplemented with eggs, cottage cheese, salmon oil, vit E, etc. and Shambo has lost more weight. A week ago he was down to 75 lbs. Now he'e a little more but you can SEE his ribs. He's getting plenty of calories. Vet thinks it could be exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Any one have experience with dog losing weight like this? He's still very high energy, just wants to run and fetch. Thanks .. .

The most common symptoms (from what I have read) are:
Weight loss despite huge appetite
Eliminating very frequently
Stools might be greasy and large piles, maybe yellowish or grayish
Sometimes eating their own stools in advanced stages
More sounds from the abdomen; flatulence
Maybe intermittent diarrhea or vomiting
Does the dog have any of these besides the weight loss? If so, hasn't the vet suggested blood tests? I'd ask.
Hi Connie -- Shambo has big stools, yellowish in color -- at first I thought it was the change of diet. His stomach has been grumbling. once in a while diarrhea -- which once again I first thought was maybe the diet change. The vet has suggested blood tests -- I'm bringing him tomorrow. Thanks.

Sounds like EPI to me, make sure the vet runs a TLI test.
This is something that (if you have a GSD, a breed that accounts for more than half of all EPI diagnoses), you would test if you saw more than one symptom, IMO.
With those symptoms, I am very surprised that the vet has not done the test Cindy mentions before now.
