Hi All,
I've been feeding my 13.5 week old, 35 lb. presa canario puppy, Cleo, a raw food diet. I've been giving her fish oil. I've read on the board about giving vitamin E also (esp. Connie and Natalya--you guys are great!).
How much should I give her? I have some gel caps that are 400 IUs. Seems like alot. If it is, can I give her one every other day, or something like that?
Don't know if it matters but Cleo also gets kelp, alfalfa, and wheat grass, every other day in a veggie "glop."
Thanks,
Eric Sacks

I'd use 3500 mg of fish oil (3.5 grams) and 100-200 IU of E at this weight.
I really like to give it with the fish oil in order to ensure protection of the PUFAs in the oil.

Thanks Connie,
Cleo is growing so fast....how much should I increase the "E" dosage as she grows? She's grown about 6 lbs. in 2 weeks. Is there a IU per pound ratio like you use for fish oil? Should I maintain that dosage when she reaches adulthood? She will probably be between 100-125 lbs as an adult.

Hi Eric,
Just quickly, I did a search on "vitamin e" here and came up with a lot of great threads - here's a good one (you should read all the way through to glean the most bits of info), but there are others, so I'd spend some time poking around the search function:
http://leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=12&Number=191483&Searchpage=4&Main=19150&Words=vitamin+&topic=0&Search=true#Post191483
To quote a few of Connie's related posts (if that's allowed ):
I use 1 gram (1000 mg) of fish oil per ten pounds of dog weight. I give a 200 IU capsule of Vitamin E (not synthetic) to a small dog and 400 IU to a big one... because the fish oil is also given based on size of dog.
The 100, 200, 400, 600 IU amounts discussed for dogs getting fish oil are well below lab tests that have shown no adverse effects from high doses. However, I don't believe that anything is "the more, the better," so staying in those ranges is probably wise. JMO.
So yes, you'll need to adjust the amounts as she grows. I wouldn't worry too much about getting the measurements spot on to the 10th of an IU though... as long as you're within RANGE you'll be just fine. Also, if you skip a vit E capsule one day, your girl will be fine - it's all about balance of nutrients over time.
Cheers,
~Natalya

Yep. It doesn't come in many dosages, and I'm always happy to find some 100 IU caps for the smallest of my own dogs. But when I have to use the 200s, I don't mind.

Hi Natalya,
Thanks to both you and Connie for the info. I suppose I'll just give Cleo a little less than 1/2 the 400 IU pill and a little more than 1/2 to Alex (small adult rottie).
Going to the fish market to look for some whole fish for Cleo and Alex. Any suggestions?

Hi Eric,
I feed whole sardines, mackerel and tilapia.
I get ground salmon and tuna from a local Oma's Pride distributor.
As a special treat my dog will get a whole belly trim salmon occasionally.
p.s. have you posted an intro.? I'd love to see a picture of your Presa puppy!

Hi Katie,
Thanks for the fish info. I would love to post a picture, but I'm an idiot. I can't figure out how to do it. I don't have a website , nor am I a member of facebook or myspace (I know, I should venture into the 21st century one of these days). Is there an easy way to post a pic?

Quite a few people use Photobucket, or you can google "image hosting" and find a lot of similar free sites. Open a free account, upload your photo(s), then you can copy or imbed the link to your photo album or individual photo(s) in your posts, emails and signature. Most of these services also let you do image size editing. This is handy because some sites, for example, will have a limit to the size of a photo that can be used in a signature.
It's fairly straightforward stuff.

Like this one.
A good place to remind folks that sig pics (only recently allowed on this board) should be small enough so that no one has to scroll because of your posts.
I get PMs all the time about oversize sig pics, and it's hard to keep up with them.
Other photos:
Two in your Member Bio post at http://leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/146/page/1 and one memorial picture for a dog who has died at http://leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/143/page/1
As Mike says, Photobucket is great for other pics. It's free, and so easy even I managed to get a picture on there.
