We're planning on adding this to our diets in the next wk or so,(the humans in the family, lol)and curious if anyone's using or has tried chia seeds with their dog? Unlike flax, it doesn't need to be ground for humans, but I don't know about dogs...guessing probably would, since vegs need to be...

Well, dogs don't have the human mechanism for converting plant sources (flax, canola, etc.) of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into the beneficial long-chain Omega 3 EFAs (DHA, EPA*). For humans, ALA can be a source of metabolically derived EPA and DHA, but even humans don't do it very efficiently, with about a 5 to 15% (as I recall) conversion rate. With dogs, it's either zero or close to zero.
I don't know much about chia seeds, but I'm guessing that the major draw is Omega 3s?
If so, then it may fall into the flax category: not a substitute for marine-source Omega 3s for the dog.
*eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA); docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
(I had to look up the actual words. )

Yup, its the Omega 3s. Oh well, thought it was worth asking about...now to track down some salmon oil in my neck of the woods. Winston's previous owner didn't use any supplements,so I don't have that lead to follow, but I have checked out the menue here, and will use that as a guide

Thanks Connie! I'm hoping to find some near me, simply to save on the S&H costs, plus the dollar conversion. With me being off work right now, things are a bit tight, and of course, I can't pick up an extra shift or work overtime, lol! If I can't find any here, I guess LB will be shipping to Canada again
